The Biostatistics Center is seeking an Associate Director of Information Technology to assist the Director of Information Technology (
BSC IT) in the oversight of all aspects of the information systems and technology needs and requirements. The Biostatistics Center is an off-campus medical research center of over 100 faculty, research, technical and administrative staff, supporting an extensive portfolio of
NIH-sponsored research with thousands of external users. The position assists other directors with the administration of the Biostatistics Center (
BSC), including assisting with Center management and policy formulation. May serve as a member of, or report to, the Center's Executive and Steering Committees. This is a management position at the university that, in addition to leading a work unit, leads and supervises staff directly, makes hiring decisions, provides training and mentoring, manages performance and determines future staffing needs.
Essential duties include:
- Maintains comprehensive expertise in information systems, networking, security, and data center operations. Contributes to the development of the organization's long-term information systems strategy. Collaborates with the Director of
BSC IT to design and architect the organization's infrastructure, ensuring scalability, reliability, and alignment with strategic goals.
- Provides leadership and guidance to the software development team, ensuring effective planning, development, deployment, operation, and life-cycle management of software systems supporting research studies. Oversees staffing needs, facilitates recruitment efforts, and manages the hiring and training of software developers. Monitors and evaluates team performance, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.
- Conducts research, customization, and development of new and emerging web and application system methodologies tailored for data acquisition, management, reporting, and project management in multicenter clinical trials. Collaborates with the Development team to plan and schedule project deliverables, set goals, and establish milestones. Work closely with key researchers and committees to ensure seamless integration and alignment. Oversees the creation and implementation of standardized procedures to maintain consistency and efficiency.
- Works closely with Principal Investigators and project managers to identify the technological requirements of research studies and develop tailored strategies to address them. Defines the necessary resources, including personnel, equipment, and software, and establishes timelines for successfully implementing projects and programs. Contributes to developing grant proposals by providing technical insights and recommendations, ensuring alignment with funding requirements and research objectives.
- Oversees and executes software projects from inception to completion, managing all administrative and managerial tasks, including supervision, planning, timeline development, reporting, and presentations. Prepares and delivers detailed progress reports to Principal Investigators and relevant committees, demonstrating strong communication skills to engage technical and research staff effectively. Facilitates meetings to review and refine data acquisition, data management, and project management requirements, ensuring alignment with project objectives. The Associate Director,
BSC IT provides comprehensive training and education to research staff, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to efficiently utilize and operate the implemented systems.
- Assesses, identifies and determines future technological requirements to support organizational goals, objectives, and research initiatives. Engages in strategic planning to anticipate and address evolving needs. Develops risk mitigation strategies and contingency plans to enhance operational resilience. Collaborates on creating and maintaining disaster recovery and business continuity plans, ensuring minimal downtime and preserving data integrity during emergencies.
- Creates and maintains comprehensive documentation for application systems and processes, encompassing standard practices, user manuals, and regulatory compliance materials. Contributes to developing, implementing, and enforcing IT policies and procedures to align with organizational standards, industry regulations, and cybersecurity protocols. Ensures ongoing compliance with industry standards, including information security, data privacy, and guidelines for good clinical practice.
- Assists in budget review and planning to align the organization's fiscal IT strategy with short and long-term objectives. Collaborates with leadership to optimize resource allocation, prioritize technology investments, and ensure financial sustainability. Contributes to forecasting future IT needs, ensuring budget proposals support organizational goals and strategic growth initiatives.
