SUMMARY/JOB PURPOSE:

The Development Team Lead (DTL), at the Executive Director level, co-leads cross-functional Development Teams (DT) alongside the Clinical Development Lead (CDL). Together, they are accountable for the integrated strategy and execution of drug development programs, spanning from IND-enabling studies through NDA/BLA submission.

The DTL serves as the strategic and operational lead for the product, working closely with functional area experts and key stakeholders across the organization. The DTL is accountable for driving development strategy, ensuring alignment with corporate objectives, and delivering on key milestones. The DTL coordinates regular updates to governance and plays a critical role in risk management, decision-making, and cross-functional coordination to advance the program efficiently and effectively.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Co-leads cross-functional Development Team (DT) in partnership with the CDL, ensuring alignment on product strategy and execution across all development functions.
  • Drive strategic and operational integration across Clinical Development, Regulatory, Safety, Medical Affairs, Data Science and Biometrics and other key functions to ensure cohesive and aligned execution.
  • With the CDL, lead the creation and development of the Clinical Development Plan and contribute to the Target Product Profile (TPP), incorporating cross-functional input and outlining strategic direction, timelines, budgets, risks and mitigation strategies.
  • Communicate effectively with executive leadership and governance bodies, providing clear, concise updates, recommendations and resource needs.
  • Facilitate informed decision-making, challenge assumptions, and ensure robust functional input to support the compound's development needs.
  • Promote data-driven decision making, proactively identifying and addressing risks, and navigating uncertainty with agility and accountability.
  • Balance strategic oversight with scientific and operational depth, adapting as needed, to address complex development challenges.
  • Lead team goal-setting, prioritization, ensuring alignment with program strategy and timely execution of deliverables.
  • Oversee risk management and contingency planning for the team, ensuring proactive identification and resolution of issues.
  • Maintain strong external awareness of scientific, regulatory, and commercial trends to inform and adapt development strategies.
  • Partner with the project manager to plan and lead effective DT meetings, ensuring productive discussions and follow-through.
  • Foster a high performing team culture, clarifying roles and responsibilities, promoting team cohesion, and resolving conflicts to optimize team performance.
  • Ensure compliance with Exelixis policies, procedures and regulatory requirements.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in related discipline and a minimum of 18 years of related experience; or,
  • Master's degree in related discipline and a minimum of 16 years of related experience; or,
  • PhD degree in related discipline and a minimum of 15 years of related experience; or,
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience:

  • At least 10 years of pharmaceutical industry experience.
  • Experience in oncology is required.
  • Experience working with corporate partners and alliance management.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Proven ability to lead and influence data-driven strategy planning and implementation.
  • A proactive and strategic thinker, with strong decision-making skills.
  • Proven ability to function effectively across a matrix organization with multiple stakeholders, with the ability and strength to focus a team to work towards its goals.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills (including presentation skills) with success in influencing all levels cross-functionally.
  • Always lead by example and demonstrates a firm commitment to Exelixis' vision and values.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across severalU.S. geographic markets, and we pay differently based on those defined markets. The base pay range for this positionis $238,000 - $338,000 annually. The base pay range may take into account the candidate's geographic region, which will adjust the pay depending on the specific work location. The base pay offered will take into account the candidate's geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, experience and internal equity, among other factors. In addition to the base salary, as part of our Total Rewards program, Exelixis offers comprehensive employee benefits package, including a 401k plan with generous company contributions, group medical, dental and vision coverage, life and disability insurance, and flexible spending accounts. Employees are also eligible for a discretionary annual bonus program, or if field sales staff, a sales-based incentive plan. Exelixis also offers employees the opportunity to purchase company stock, and receive long-term incentives, 15 accrued vacation days in their first year, 17 paid holidays including a company-wide winter shutdown in December, and up to 10 sick days throughout the calendar year.
