This is a full-time union position, with a starting pay rate of $34.55 per hour, and requires a union initiation fee upon hire and monthly union dues/fees. This position contributes to the success of Brookfield Zoo Chicago ("BZC") by performing skilled craft duties throughout the park in support of BZC's mission and operating goals with minimal guidance.

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Senior Craftsworkers are expected to perform a variety of duties that may include any or all of the following. Specific assignments will vary depending upon the nature of work performed and/or specific duties assigned.

*Ensures facilities systems are functional, well maintained, and support BZC's conservation communication objectives. Ensures work performed provides a safe environment for guests, staff, and the animal collection.

*Perform skilled craft duties related to facilities systems throughout the park with little or no supervision, ensuring work/services meet section standards, clients' specifications, applicable codes, standards, program goals, and is aesthetically pleasing. This includes routine craftsworker tasks, preventative maintenance, special repair projects, capital construction, special events work, emergency/safety-related work, unanticipated special repairs, unanticipated capital projects, and overhead tasks.

*As assigned, coordinate routine maintenance, special repair, capital and other repair projects:



  1. Perform routine inspections of facilities. Perform routine tasks as needed. Coordinate projects and discuss repairs with appropriate personnel. Provide technical advice as requested.
  2. Advise staff of resource needs. Monitor schedule and communicate pertinent information to all affected parties.
  3. Ensure projects take place with least amount of encroachment on guests and the animal collection. Ensure proper signage is utilized and safety barricades are in place where needed.
  4. Ensure work performed meets specified quality control standards.



*Perform highly skilled-level duties as assigned. Provide Manager with resource needs for budget development. Assist in controlling the operating budget by ensuring the proper and efficient utilization of allocated resources. Provide Manager with facility survey data.

*Perform tasks associated with the sections' special events operating program. This includes performing skilled craft duties, providing estimates and communicating all pertinent information to Managers and other appropriate parties. Carry out and assist in the administration of tasks associated with the section's standard operating procedures including, but not limited to equipment and shop maintenance, safety, inventory, purchasing, facility surveys, and utility location. Ensure all work performed meets set standards and specification and complies with established quality control standards.

*Perform duties associated with the section's overhead operating program. Accurately complete daily labor allocation sheets without direct supervision. Provide guidance to new personnel. Attend and participate in meetings as assigned. Participate in the section's emergency response and animal welfare program as assigned.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:



  • High school diploma or educational equivalent (e.g., GED.) Graduate of an accredited apprenticeship program, six (6) years of experience at a journeyman level, or six years' equivalent training and experience required.
  • Six years' relevant experience required.
  • Ability to perform all traditional tasks related to the field. Must possess skills in related fields; HVAC systems and components including boilers, RTU's AHU's, pumps, A/C and refrigeration units, Chillers, building automation and controls and experience with working with voltages up to 480V 3Phase.
  • Must possess a universal refrigeration card or have the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Ability to read, write, and perform math commensurate with field of responsibility and required job duties.
  • Proactive, persistent, and helpful. Team player.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge with all codes and regulations related to trade.
  • May be required to possess or obtain relevant certification and registration card related to field within 6 months of employment.
  • Ability to read blueprints and construction specifications.
  • Basic computer skills required with Microsoft Outlook and Word. Ability to learn new software.
  • Good troubleshooting skills.
  • Self-starter with good project organization skills.
  • English fluency at a professional working proficiency.
  • Cultural competency; experience and/or ability to work and interact effectively with a diverse, multicultural audience.
  • Valid driver's license required at time of hire. Illinois residents must possess a valid Illinois license within 90 days of hire. Valid out-of-state license required for out-of-state residents.



DESIRABLE/PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:



  • Universal refrigeration card or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Multilingual ability, Spanish fluency a plus.

Union Full-Time Employees

Eligibility: Eligible employee is defined as a regular, full-time employee who is regularly scheduled to work a minimum of 35 hours or more per week.

Time away from work: Vacation time is accrued on a per-payroll basis based on an employment anniversary year starting on the date of hire. Unused vacation time does not carry over from one calendar year to the next.

Vacation: Vacation is earned based on the following schedule:

Personal Days: Union employees receive three (3) personal days per year which can be used for any purpose. Advance scheduling is required when foreseeable. Personal days are pro-rated for the first year of employment. Personal days must be used by the end of each calendar year. Any employee with 20 years of service or more receives one additional personal day each year.

Sick Time: Sick time accrues at a rate equivalent to 10 sick days per year. Any employee who does not use sick time during the calendar year is credited with two (2) additional sick days that year. Accumulation of sick time is unlimited.

Holidays: Union employees are eligible for 10 paid holidays per year.

Medical Insurance: BZC pays 100% of the cost of benefits for bargaining unit employees. There is no cost to the employee. Medical insurance is provided through the Teamsters union. One plan is available. A waiver credit is provided for employees who waive enrollment in medical insurance. Coverage begins following a 90-day waiting period. Coverage continues for 90 days after the employee's date of separation. Employees can also cover their spouse and child(ren) under age 27.

Retirement Savings: A 401(k) savings plan is available for all employees. Choose either pre-tax and/or Roth after-tax contributions. First of the quarter following one year of service, eligible employees receive matching contributions of 50% of the first 6% you contribute.

Employer-paid Income Protection: Short-Term disability benefits are provided through the Teamsters union, for up to 26 weeks, if you are unable to work. Long-Term disability benefits are provided through Brookfield Zoo Chicago for up to 60% of the employee's monthly wages if the employee is unable to return to work. Basic Term Life insurance is provided through the Teamsters union. Eligible employees are automatically enrolled in these benefits.

Union Temporary Aide-level Employees

Personal Days



Union employees receive three (3) personal days per year. Personal days are pro-rated for the first year of employment based on date of hire. All personal days must be used by December 31 of the calendar year or by the end of the employee's temporary assignment, whichever comes first.




Sick Time



Employees who work 8-hour or 10-hour days accrue based on the equivalent of 80 hours (10 days) of sick time per year. Sick time is accrued on a per pay-period basis. For an employee who works an 8-hour day, they earn 3.08 hours of sick time each pay period. There is no maximum accrual of sick time. Employees who have perfect attendance during a calendar year are awarded two additional sick days.
