Position description

The Academic Coordinator for General Chemistry Laboratory Courses oversees the operations of UC Irvine's lower-division general chemistry laboratory courses, which serve over 1,200 students every academic quarter. The Coordinator works closely with the faculty instructor(s) to ensure alignment with course objectives and instructional standards. Responsibilities include managing enrollment logistics, maintaining instructional quality through evidence-based educational practices and regular curriculum review, and promoting equitable assessment.

The Coordinator directly supervises and supports more than 25 teaching assistants (TAs) each quarter, conducting initial and ongoing training, weekly meetings, and performance evaluations. The Coordinator enforces laboratory safety regulations and academic integrity using platforms like turnitin.com, ensuring compliance and addressing incidents promptly.

The Coordinator manages educational technologies such as learning management systems (LMS), electronic lab notebooks, online homework systems, and AI-assisted grading tools. The Coordinator collaborates with campus computing resources, developing and integrating web-based applications into existing systems.

Additionally, the Coordinator administers the Course Materials Fee (CMF) budget including mandatory reporting and overseeing the procurement and management of laboratory supplies. The Coordinator actively collaborates with faculty to refine laboratory curricula, advocate for necessary resources, and implement accommodations for students with disabilities, fostering inclusive learning environments.
