The Opportunity:

The Department of Chemistry is seeking a Laboratory Technician III to support the Chemistry and Forensic Science teaching laboratories. The successful candidate will prepare materials and equipment for students and teaching assistants use in the laboratory. This position also requires one to maintain stockroom inventories, safely handle hazardous materials including their proper disposal, clean and reset laboratories between lab sections, and assist with departmental tasks.

The ideal candidate will have a degree in Chemistry or a related area, as well as some laboratory experience. This position works independently much of the time so the ability to multitask and prioritize tasks is essential. Excellent communication and organizational skills are especially important, as this Technician mentor's student workers.

Responsibilities:



  • Responsible for preparing materials and setting up equipment for teaching lab courses, for maintaining the stockroom and teaching lab areas, and assisting the overall department as needed.

  • Responsible for coordinating with Instructors of Record in securing syllabi, materials lists, scheduling, and preparing chemical solutions and materials. May train teaching assistants and coordinate purchasing and staging of materials.

  • Ensure teaching labs are setup properly each day with adequate chemicals, supplies and working equipment.

  • Assist in developing new experiments, troubleshooting current experiments, and updating lab setup sheets as needed.

  • Positively interact with faculty, staff, and students to assist with experiments and functioning of teaching labs.

  • Assist with daily maintenance of the teaching labs, prep areas and stockroom, ensuring that areas are clean and safe, while addressing any safety concerns or maintenance issues.

  • Ensure safety procedures are followed by graduate and undergraduate students at all times and provides safety information as needed throughout the semester (including first week lab safety talks).

  • Assist with receiving and delivery packages for the department.

  • Assist with coordination of hazardous waste pick-ups.

  • Assist with maintaining the Chemical Inventory System and ensuring the proper storage and segregation of chemicals, along with proper disposal of expired chemicals and hazardous waste.

  • Assist with completing teaching lab and stockroom inventory each semester and compiling a list of chemicals and supplies to be ordered.

  • Monitor and ensure all checked out equipment is returned.

  • Coordinate with Instrumentation Specialist for training and repairs, assist with troubleshooting and maintenance of instrumentation, and create user guides as needed.

  • As directed, train and delegate tasks to student assistants and assist with new GTA training on teaching lab procedures and expectations.

  • Assist with special projects, including cleaning and moving items. Other duties as assigned by Coordinators and Department Chair.


Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma or Equivalent and 4+ years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant to Fla. Stat. 112.219. Click here for more information.

Preferred Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, or degree in related area with Chemistry coursework.

  • Previous chemistry experience.

  • Previous laboratory experience or experience with scientific instruments.

  • Experience in handling chemicals and following safety protocols.

  • Proven ability to follow technical instructions in a laboratory setting.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.




Health Assessment Required:

UCF policy requires completion and passing of a physical exam for this position.

Special Instructions to the Applicants:

This position will work 40 hours per week. The schedule for this position varies based on laboratory hours and availability. Laboratories are open Monday-Thursday, 7:30 AM to 7:20 PM; and Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:20 PM. Summer hours may vary.
