Job Summary

The Cyster lab at UCSF has a Staff Research Associate 1 opportunity. Under direct supervision and training, the Staff Research Associate will be responsible for laboratory research duties. This position will be involved in experiments including molecular biology, mouse handling, bacterial culture, mammalian cell culture, preparing tissues from mice for flow cytometric analysis, preparing and cutting tissue sections for microscopy, and perform other duties such as lab ordering/organization.

We are looking for a candidate excited about molecular and immumological approaches, is eager to learn and comfortable with mechanistic thinking. The candidate will work with a team of scientists to help genotype mice, help prepare lymphoid cells and tissue for analysis, culture cells and perform flow cytometric analyses. General lab managerial tasks such as cataloging and ordering reagents are part of the position, and other duties as assigned. In addition, independent research projects may be available separate from the above describe duties. The Cyster lab is a highly collaborative space that is pushing the cutting edge of immunology research.

Duties to include:

  • Under direct supervision and training, perform PCR and running agarose DNA gels for genotyping of mice. Help with weaning and ear punching of mice. Help prepare lymphoid cells from mouse tissues for flow cytometric analysis (FACS), and lymphoid tissue sections for microscopy analysis.
  • Maintain stocks, reagents, laboratory equipment, perform other duties as assigned
  • Lab coordination: communicate with lab members about results of genotyping analysis. Perform calculations, compile and summarize data. Recognize irregularities and invalid results and troubleshoot accordingly.

Department Description

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

Required Qualifications


  • BA/BS in biological sciences or a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience with molecular biology techniques and methods (PCR, DNA gels); culturing mammalian cells; basic mouse handling.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team and independently and take initiative in designing experiments and solving problems; communication and organizational skills; attention to detail; ability to multitask effectively; excellent demonstrated record of accomplishment; ability to adhere to all campus safety policies.
  • Knowledge of basic mammalian molecular and cell biology processes.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Able to perform mouse handling including weaning.
  • Experience with FACS.
