Description The Research Lab Manager oversees and coordinates the day-to-day activities of an academic science laboratory or core facility to assist faculty with management and administration of research and teaching programs. This individual is responsible for operational success and assists in defining strategy/direction in accordance with national standards and Children's National policies and procedures. The Lab Manager directs research technicians, assistants and medical students, and assists post-doctoral fellows with their research. In addition, the Lab Manager oversees the operations of multiple research efforts under the direction of a principal investigator or center director.

Qualifications

Minimum Education
Bachelor's degree in basic science or related field with 5-7 years relevant experience. Or
Master's Degree Master's degree or PhD .

Minimum Work Experience
4 years At least 4 - 8 years of related experience. (Required)
3 years At least 3-5 years of supervisory experience/management experience in related job function. (Required)

Required Skills/Knowledge
Proficiency in the use of a wide variety of lab techniques, research equipment and research-related software.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Proven ability to communicate effectively with a multi-disciplinary research team.
Experienced in department budget and personnel communication.
Demonstration of adherence to standards for the responsible conduct of research.
Proficient in the use of administrative and clinical information resources and decision support tools.
Proficient in compiling and analyzing data to support upper management decision-making.
Tests and procedures require the attainment of knowledge acquired from a master's degree program and additional experience and not from on-the-job training alone.

Functional Accountabilities
Conduct of Research



  • Plan, conduct, and manage research projects within the federal and institutional regulations and policies under the direction of the principal investigator.


  • Responsible for appropriate use of research funds and resources.


  • Comply with all annual job-related training and requirements.


Laboratory Work



  • Design studies and plans research projects.


  • Independently develops experimental methods.


  • Performs and directs laboratory work.


  • Performs laboratory tests, which require the analysis of results and interpretation of methods.


  • Analyzes and reports results.


  • Modifies methods and protocols in conjunction with principal investigator.


Program Administration



  • Implements strategic plan through management of day-to-day operations of the research laboratory or center.


  • Coordinates multiple research studies.


  • Troubleshoots operational issues and develops action plans to resolve.


  • Collaborates with upper management on significant operational issues/barriers.


  • Assists upper management in the development, implementation and evaluation of services, programs, performance standards, policies and procedures to achieve departmental goals.


  • Administers programs and services within budgetary guidelines.


  • Develops and implements standard policies and procedures.


  • Collaborates with principal investigator to evaluate current and new program initiatives for effectiveness, feasibility and cost.


  • Assists principal investigator with preparation of grant applications and publications.


Human Resources Management



  • Hires, trains, develops and directs assigned staff to meet research center operational objectives.


  • Assists faculty with all personnel functions, including recruitment, performance evaluations and termination of staff.


  • Provides timely coaching and performance feedback.


  • Develops research staffing plan/schedule and deploys staff appropriately to optimize productivity and ensure quality services in support of research activities.


Budget and Financial Management



  • Facilitates the development and monitoring of individual laboratory budgets.


  • Assists center director in analyzing performance reports for the center budget and evaluates budget variances.


  • Develops recommendations to facilitate the center meeting budget requirements.


  • Manages the development, evaluation and implementation of new ventures, services and partnerships within or outside CRI on behalf of the center director.
  • Develops business plans as needed.
  • Anticipate and responds to customer needs; follows up until needs are met
