This is a full-time, overtime eligible position on the Olympia Campus of The Evergreen State College.
Position Purpose
Under the general supervision of the Creative Services and Web Associate Director, this position is responsible for facilitating, coordinating, developing, and implementing visual designs across a range of media in support of recruitment, marketing, fundraising, branding, awareness, and community outreach activities for assigned projects and tasks. This position helps develop, implement, and promote effective visual designs, brand consistency, and communication across the organization.
Nature and Scope
This is a journey-level communications design professional with extensive experience, including communications, print, digital design and collaborative work experience. This position reports to the Creative Services and Web Associate Director and works closely with the Graphic Designer Senior.
Essential Functions

  • Work closely with colleagues within and beyond Marketing and Communications to understand and translate strategic business and brand objectives into creative concepts, suggesting the appropriate channel (e.g., mail, in person, web delivery, etc.) and medium (e.g., postcard, letter, brochure, web ad, email campaign, etc.) for reaching the audience and fulfilling the objectives outlined for each project.
  • Encourage and steward a unified creative vision for the Evergreen brand, working with others in the department to collaboratively ensure consistency across all media (print, social media, digital media, advertising, web, and video).
  • Produce assigned projects from concept through completion, primarily for print, but also for digital, and social media platforms.
  • Conceive, design, edit, and produce organization-wide informational materials or digital products, considering intended use, audience, goals (for the project and the division), and budget.
  • Prepare and package clean electronic files for transmission and optimal printing, either as native file/font/asset packages or print-ready PDFs.
  • Effectively manage electronic and other project and team assets.
  • Responsible for some visual concept development based on creative brief and brand parameters, information design, and digital production work on major admissions-related materials, and major alumni and development communications.
  • Ensure compliance with Evergreen's established design standards, logo usage, and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility requirements.
  • Act as a mentor on design topics for the creative team, student employees and fellows, and other colleagues.
  • In close partnership with the Creative Services and Web Associate Director and Graphic Designer Senior, inspire, coordinate, and provide feedback on others' work for alignment with strategic objectives and overall impact.
  • Adhere to production schedules, quality standards, and project specifications.
  • Collaborate with a range of contributors within the department, campus clients, and others as appropriate for the project or initiative.
  • Articulate and communicate Marketing and Communications' creative work and processes to Evergreen's internal clients, who are often managers, directors, or executives.
  • May be the primary point of contact for particular projects and/or clients.
  • Provide detailed written instructions to printers and vendors for a variety of complex reproduction elements, including papers, inks, offset, digital, and relief printing methods, folding, scoring, and other bindery techniques, and make recommendations.
  • Purchase and direct creative art services from outside designers, illustrators, photographers, and other vendors when assigned.
  • May use illustration abilities to create or enhance infographics and drawings for publication layouts.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of and ability to apply information design principles.
  • Clear understanding of fundamentals of layout and design for effective communication, including expertise in composition, typography, color theory, and other design elements required to produce attractive, functional, and effective designs consistent with institutional image and brand.
  • Strong understanding of marketing and advertising principles, including digital advertising.
  • Ability to work with a creative brief to develop and persuasively present innovative design solutions that meet or exceed project objectives.
  • Skill in and ability to apply the principles of design and interpret strategic goals into design across media platforms (including short- and long-form print, email, social media and web).
  • Comfort and skill with digital tools and methods for creating all forms of digital design, including expert-level skill using Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat for print and digital design, and the ability to learn and use new technology as needed.
  • Illustration ability.
  • Ability to build trust and respect college-wide by demonstrating professionalism and diplomacy skills to convincingly explain and present a creative vision and concept, and to speak with clarity and confidence to non-designers.
  • Skill in the web and digital environment, using knowledge of current and emerging technologies as they relate to visual design.
  • Clear understanding of the role of design in strategic communications.
  • Ability to think strategically and recommend visual communications strategies, tactics, and messaging.
  • Strong conceptual design skills, including effective use of styles, visual hierarchies, and typography.
  • Skill in designing for print, including understanding of printing and binding techniques and considerations.
  • Understanding of basic branding principles, as well as the skill of designing within a brand system, and the ability to work on branding or rebranding campaigns.
  • Familiarity with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility requirements for print and web.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively work independently and as part of a highly collaborative, creative team.
  • Skill in and ability to mentor others.
  • Ability to work positively and effectively with a diverse range of coworkers and colleagues and foster an inclusive work environment.

  • Proficiency with Apple Macintosh computer operating system.
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft 365, including Teams, Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for office communications.

Minimum Qualifications
Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Fine Arts in design or an art-related field, or equivalent formal training.
  • Three years of experience in an advertising/marketing agency, design firm, or an in-house creative team in a commercial, organizational, or institutional setting.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must provide proof of identity and employment eligibility within three days of beginning work.
  • This position is part of a bargaining unit and covered by a collective bargaining agreement.
  • Prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the position.
  • Prior to an official offer of employment, a Declaration Regarding Sexual Misconduct form must be submitted to the college per RCW 28B.112.080.
