Job Summary

Under direction, work independently with responsibility to the Attending Veterinarian, provide specialized veterinary, technical and research support services to Principal Investigators through Campus Veterinary Services (CVS). Routinely provide veterinary treatment to research and teaching colony animals and supports campus vivaria in Davis, Sacramento and outlying areas in compliance with national and state regulations and standards to maintain Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care, International (AAALAC) accreditation. Provide specialized technical support to campus-wide research and teaching activities. Independently treat a diverse range of species (approximately 50) used for research and teaching on campus such as rodents, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) covered species including nonhuman primates, livestock, and other traditional and non-traditional laboratory animal species (birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, etc.). Administratively oversees the campus' animal care and health practices, the screening of incoming animals, the campus' diagnostic and disease control practices to ensure overall compliance with animal welfare standards. Provide surgical and anesthetic support including induction, maintenance and recovery from anesthesia and post-operative monitoring in all species. Maintain administrative documentation of procedures consistent with internal policy, USDA, ILAR Guide and the Animal Welfare Act. Collect samples, initiate the prevention and treatment of a wide variety of diseases in laboratory animals, and provide training and oversight of students and volunteers. Act as a resource for investigators by providing a variety of rechargeable research support services, training, and consultations.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • California Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVT) license.
  • Required to hold a valid California driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program
  • Bachelor's in Biological Sciences or similar.
  • Clinical education and experience working with a variety of laboratory animal species such as mice, rats, rabbits, non-human primates, ferrets, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, dogs, cats, pigs, cattle, and sheep with familiarity with restraint, euthanasia and husbandry management practices.
  • Experience with establishing appropriate anesthetic protocols, surgical prep, monitoring and assessing anesthetic depth, heart rate, blood pressure, temperature, and respiratory rate during anesthesia on a variety of species such as rodents, rabbits, pigs and nonhuman primates as well as operating room maintenance, surgical instrument care, and use of anesthetic, ventilation and monitoring equipment.
  • Experience with performing routine clinical procedures such as catheterizing animals, performing anesthetic induction, intubation, bandaging, venipuncture for blood collection and treatments, administering oral, intravenous, subcutaneous and intramuscular treatments in animals, performing tissue sampling, blood collection in rodents, performing various permanent identification techniques, and perform routine diagnostic procedures including but not limited to; hematology, fecal flotation, radiography, urinalysis, cytology.
  • Experience with electronic medical record systems and skills to modify equipment and provide solutions for getting equipment and/or systems operational.
  • Experience to communicate in writing and verbally with a diverse range of people.
  • Knowledge of pharmacology, antibiotics, analgesics such as opioids, anesthesia drugs including a wide variety of medicines used in surgery and/or treatment of diseases.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science at the Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) or higher level.
  • Experience and knowledge to train others by providing guidance and instruction in the areas of surgery, animal care, treatments and other clinical care services.
  • Knowledge of the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and USDA Animal Welfare Act Regulations, occupational safety guidelines for radiation, biohazards and chemical hazards and experience with interpreting IACUC animal use protocols.
  • Knowledge of personal computers and software such as Microsoft products such as Outlook, Word and Excel and Adobe Acrobat and DVMax.

The position is one of several positions within Campus Veterinary Services, responsible to the Laboratory Animal Attending Veterinarian, responsible for clinical and research support to over 50 species of research and teaching animals covered by approximately 1400 animal care and use protocols at UC Davis.

Valid California driver's license required. Position will participate in Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Notice System. Work with or around areas with sick animals some of which may be capable of inflicting injuries, hazardous materials, and/or infectious diseases and nonhuman primates. Perform assigned duties in Biosafety level (BSL) 1, 2 or 3 facilities where laboratory animals including nonhuman primates may be either naturally or experimentally infected with potentially hazardous diseases such as herpes B virus, Q Fever, Valley Fever, Brucella, etc. Work in an odiferous environment, damp or dusty conditions that are found in animal facilities and outdoor animal enclosures. Employees shall participate in required preventative medical monitoring programs which may include blood tests, immunizations, TB screening, respiratory screening and clearance, and/or complete physical exam; blood born and air born pathogen training to meet federal, state, and university requirements. Wear protective clothing and respirators in circumstances that require personal protection from infectious disease. Work flexible schedule, overtime, holidays and occasional weekends on short notice. Employee is personally responsible for following health and safety guidelines/instructions.
