Oncology Specialist - Cerner / VA

Position Description

The ideal candidate will serve as a subject matter expert capable of bridging the gap between vendor technology and clinical operations. They must possess a strong understanding of the product's functionality and troubleshooting techniques, enabling them to validate system performance and identify issues. This includes evaluating current workflows, recognizing opportunities for optimization, and recommending improvements in either system design or operational processes. The candidate should have firsthand industry experience in Oracle Health Oncology and demonstrate deep familiarity with the application of electronic health records in that setting. They must work to resolve issues and change requests. They must be able to confidently lead discussions with diverse stakeholders, assess current-state workflows, and propose enhancements that consider both immediate needs and downstream impacts. Additionally, they should be adept at articulating changes to affected groups, integrating those insights into training content and communication strategies to support long-term success across future rollouts.

Type of Employment: Full-time salaried and fully benefited position

Work Location/Travel: Expected 50% travel required; applicants must be free from travel restrictions to accommodate evolving needs of the client.

Salary Range: $95,654 - $129,187 base salary, depending on experience and location. Competitive salary/pay, potential for bonuses. There are multiple factors that are considered in determining final pay for a position, including, but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and competencies that align to the specified role, geographic location, education and certifications as well as contract provisions regarding labor categories that are specific to the position. The pay range for this position is highly competitive but dependent upon employment type (1099, contract, W2).

Role Reports to: Hiring Manager

Direct Reports: This role has no direct reports

Responsibilities:

  • Design, build, and optimize oncology-specific Cerner EHR content (PowerPlans, documentation tools, MPages)

  • Deliver clinical best practices for oncology documentation, scheduling, and treatment plan workflows

  • Train providers, nurses, and clinical teams on Cerner oncology functionalities

  • Troubleshoot EHR issues and coordinate resolution with technical teams

  • Participate in system testing, user acceptance testing (UAT), and workflow validation

  • Provide delivery and operational excellence across multiple Cerner implementation phases

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure high-quality outcomes aligned with VA standards

  • Develop proposals, charters, and project documentation to support client deliverables

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Strong understanding of oncology clinical workflows, including patient intake, diagnosis, treatment planning, chemotherapy administration, radiation therapy coordination, follow-up care, and survivorship documentation.

  • In-depth knowledge of Oracle Health's oncology-related solutions (e.g., PowerChart Oncology, Oncology Flowsheets, and Medication Management), including design, build, configuration, testing, and optimization within VA environments.

  • Familiarity with VA policies, clinical standards, and federal regulations (e.g., HIPAA, FISMA, FedRAMP) as they relate to oncology information management, medication safety, and patient data privacy.

  • Skilled in assessing oncology clinical and operational requirements, analyzing workflow and data issues, and providing actionable recommendations to improve care coordination and documentation.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trust, foster collaboration, and support oncologists, nurses, pharmacists, technical teams, and VA stakeholders.

  • Ability to educate, coach, and guide clinical staff and stakeholders through workflow changes, system enhancements, and adoption of new oncology-focused features or tools.

  • Adept at managing competing priorities and supporting concurrent oncology initiatives while ensuring alignment with project goals, timelines, and clinical safety standards.

  • Proficient in developing and maintaining clear, actionable documentation including clinical workflows, technical guides, and training materials tailored to oncology users.

  • Committed to staying current with Oracle Health innovations, oncology informatics best practices, and VA clinical policies to drive continuous improvement and optimized cancer care delivery.

Education/Certification Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in healthcare, informatics, or related field.

  • RN or PharmD Clinical licensure

Preferred:

  • Master's degree in health informatics, Public Health, or related field

  • Cerner credentialing or certification in oncology or ambulatory solutions

  • Change management or project management experience (PMP/Prosci preferred)

Experience Required:

  • 5+ years of clinical informatics experience, including implementation and support of oncology modules within the Cerner EHR.

  • Hands-on experience with Cerner oncology workflows and build tools

Technical Skills Required:

  • Cerner Millennium: PowerChart, Oncology, PowerPlans, MPages, Scheduling, Dynamic Documentation

  • Reporting & Tools: Power Insight, ServiceNow, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint

  • Project Tools: Bedrock, MS Project, AD, Visio
