Position Summary:

The Engineering Controls Certification Specialist (Hazardous Work Protection) is responsible for certifying and maintaining engineering controls designed to protect personnel from exposure to hazardous environments. This role focuses on ensuring the integrity, functionality, and compliance of control systems such as ventilation, containment, isolation, and interlock mechanisms used in industrial, laboratory, or high-risk operational settings. The specialist applies experience and technical knowledge to support a safe and compliant work environment. The specialist will Promote worksite or product safety by applying knowledge of industrial processes, mechanics, chemistry, psychology, and industrial health and safety laws.

Health and Safety Engineers, Except Mining Safety Engineers and Inspectors, and industrial product safety engineers are the ideal candidate. This role is contingent upon contract award.

Key Responsibilities:




  • Perform inspections, testing, and certification of engineering controls used in hazardous work areas (e.g., fume hoods, glove boxes, isolation chambers, HEPA filtration units, and exhaust systems).





  • Verify that engineering controls meet internal standards and external regulatory requirements (OSHA, ANSI, NFPA, EPA, etc.).





  • Maintain detailed records of control system certifications, calibrations, deficiencies, and corrective actions.





  • Coordinate and conduct periodic re-certification and performance verification for high-risk work areas.





  • Support the development and revision of SOPs related to hazardous work controls, including operational limitations, emergency procedures, and maintenance protocols.





  • Collaborate with engineering, maintenance, and safety teams to implement upgrades or modifications to control systems.





  • Investigate failures or deviations in engineering controls and recommend or oversee corrective actions.





  • Participate in hazard analyses, risk assessments, and planning reviews for work involving toxic chemicals, biological agents, radiological materials, or other hazardous processes.





  • Provide technical support and guidance during readiness reviews or safety walkdowns.





  • Contribute to the training of personnel on safe work practices and proper use of engineering controls.




Minimum Qualifications:




  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.





  • At least 5 years of experience in a safety, industrial hygiene, maintenance, or technical role involving hazardous materials or engineering controls.





  • Strong working knowledge of ventilation systems, containment design, and hazard mitigation strategies.





  • Familiarity with relevant regulations and standards (e.g., OSHA 1910 Subparts H/L/Z, ANSI Z9, NFPA 45/70).





  • Ability to read and interpret engineering schematics, system drawings, and technical specifications.





  • Strong attention to detail and documentation practices.





  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) and document control systems.




Preferred Qualifications:




  • Completion of technical training or certification programs (e.g., HVAC testing & balancing, ASHRAE, CIH or CHST coursework, or relevant military/DOE training).





  • Experience certifying engineering controls in high-consequence environments (e.g., laboratories, cleanrooms, nuclear or chemical facilities).





  • Familiarity with safety management systems (SMS) and performance assurance programs.





  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.




Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:




  • Work may be performed in industrial, laboratory, or field settings with potential exposure to hazardous materials.





  • Use of PPE (personal protective equipment), including respirators or protective suits, may be required.





  • Frequent standing, walking, climbing ladders, and inspecting mechanical systems in confined or elevated spaces.





  • Ability to lift 25-50 lbs and perform physical tasks as needed during inspections or certifications.
