Position Summary:

The Radiation Specialist serves as the subject matter expert for radiation safety and compliance across all operations involving ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. This role ensures the effective implementation of safety, surety, health, security, and environmental protocols through strategic planning, audits, and inspections. The specialist applies advanced knowledge of radiation protection principles, industrial safety practices, and regulatory compliance to minimize risk, protect personnel, and ensure alignment with applicable laws and standards. The specialist will Promote worksite or product safety by applying knowledge of industrial processes, mechanics, chemistry, psychology, and industrial health and safety laws.

Health and Safety Engineers, Except Mining Safety Engineers and Inspectors, and industrial product safety engineers are the ideal candidate. This role is contingent upon contract award.

Key Responsibilities:




  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive radiation protection programs in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations (e.g., NRC, DOE, OSHA, EPA).





  • Lead or support internal audits, environmental inspections, and safety assessments related to radioactive materials, radiation-producing devices, and associated controls.





  • Collaborate in cross-functional safety efforts encompassing chemical, biological, environmental, and physical hazards, integrating radiation safety into broader EHS initiatives.





  • Conduct hazard analyses and risk assessments for radiation-emitting processes, equipment, and facilities.





  • Ensure proper calibration, use, and maintenance of radiation detection and monitoring equipment.





  • Review and update SOPs, safety manuals, and emergency plans involving radiation safety and surety protocols.





  • Support licensing, registration, and regulatory reporting for radioactive materials and devices.





  • Investigate radiological incidents, perform root cause analysis, and develop corrective/preventative action plans.





  • Train personnel on radiation safety practices, ALARA principles, proper PPE use, and emergency response procedures.




Serve as a liaison with regulatory agencies and internal stakeholders to ensure ongoing compliance and operational excellence.

Minimum Qualifications:




  • Bachelor's Degree in Health Physics, Radiological Sciences, Nuclear Engineering, Environmental Science, or a closely related field.



  • At least 7 years of professional experience in radiation safety, industrial health and safety, or environmental health and safety roles.





  • In-depth knowledge of applicable regulations (e.g., NRC 10 CFR, DOE Orders, ANSI, OSHA, EPA).





  • Experience conducting audits, inspections, and compliance evaluations involving radiation sources.





  • Strong communication skills with the ability to educate and influence across technical and non-technical stakeholders.





  • Proficiency in technical writing, safety documentation, and regulatory reporting.





  • Familiarity with safety management systems (SMS), radiation dosimetry, and exposure tracking systems.




Preferred Qualifications:




  • Certification or eligibility as a Certified Health Physicist (CHP) or equivalent.





  • Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) experience or credentials preferred.





  • Master's Degree in a related field is a plus.





  • Experience working in government, defense, nuclear, medical, or research environments.





  • Familiarity with integrated safety management systems (ISMS) and continuous improvement programs (e.g., ISO 45001, ISO 14001).




Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:




  • Work may involve field inspections, laboratory environments, or industrial areas with exposure to radiation (within regulatory limits).





  • Must be able to wear appropriate PPE, including dosimeters, respirators, or protective garments.





  • Occasional travel and participation in emergency response drills or incidents may be required.





  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs and stand or walk for extended periods during inspections.
