Tax Specialist

Job Description

This position is responsible for assisting non-US citizen members of the campus community and for overseeing I.R.C. Chapter 3 (nonresident) tax compliance by determining appropriate reporting and withholding obligations for wages, scholarships, and other types of income. This role works closely with university Payroll, Finance, Cashiers, International Student & Scholar Services, and academic departments to provide substantive tax advice and to facilitate the University's operations, including payments to foreign entities, honoraria to guest lecturers, and many other contractual and financial relationships between the university and international persons and businesses.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Determine tax residency and appropriate tax withholding of non-US citizen members of the campus community.
  • Develop an understanding of international tax treaty provisions that affect University of Missouri students, faculty, and staff.
  • Assist in the development of appropriate policies and procedures applicable to compensation paid to non-US citizens, students, faculty, and staff.
  • Act as a knowledge center for the campus community of tax laws and policies via written and verbal communications.
  • Monitor laws, policies, and regulations as they relate to taxation and employment of non-citizens.
  • Manage database files and documentation required by the IRS pertaining to non-US citizen taxation and employment.
  • Work closely with University Central Payroll to accurately issue 1042-S reporting forms annually.
Shift

Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 4 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

JD preferred but not required; or Master of Accounting; or comparable training in law, taxation, or accounting.
Experience working Peoplesoft and Sprintax software (Sprintax Calculus) or a similar product, such as International Tax Navigator, Glacier, etc...
One to two years of experience in the following areas: international tax treaties; W-2 & 1042 reporting; income tax and FICA tax.
Ability to communicate professionally and clearly, particularly in writing.

Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range: $53,000 - $72,000 per year
Grade: GGS-010
