MizzouRec Services and Facilities is a department within the Division of Student Affairs that provides quality leisure experiences to all members of the campus community, primarily Mizzou students. Research shows a positive correlation between physical activity and educational outcomes of university students. Recreational sports and exercise provide students with opportunities for involvement and to develop a sense of belonging on campus.
Job Description
Summary The Fitness Coordinator at MizzouRec is a full-time professional staff member responsible for the oversight and daily management of one of three areas of fitness: group fitness, personal training, and/or fitness floor within the Student Recreation Complex. This position will touch all three components and work closely with the overall team to ensure MizzouRec is best aligned to meet student and community needs. This position plays a key role in creating a welcoming and performance-focused environment for a wide variety of students. The Coordinator will recruit, hire, train, and supervise 40-50 student employees, ensuring staff are well-equipped to provide exceptional customer service, enforce safety protocols, and educate patrons on the proper techniques during classes and/or use of strength and cardio equipment. In addition to managing staff, the Coordinator will lead initiatives to maintain fitness equipment, develop operational policies for programming and facility spaces, and collaborate with other MizzouRec departments to enhance the overall fitness and wellness experience. This position requires a dynamic and proactive leader who is passionate about student development, fitness education, and creating a positive atmosphere for all facility users. Essential Functions
- Serve as a member of the fitness and wellness team that includes an Assistant Director for Fitness and Wellness and a second Fitness Coordinator.
- Recruit, hire, train and manage a large team of student employees (40-50).
- Develop and implement staff training programs focused on customer service, instruction, safety and equipment usage.
- Monitor and maintain the cleanliness, functionality and safety of fitness spaces, equipment and/or floor operations.
- Provide leadership and support to staff, addressing issues or concerns as they arise.
- Collaborate with other professional staff to enhance the overall wellness experience for the campus community.
- Assist with the leadership and training of our certified Personal Trainers
- Play a key role in recommending new purchases of all fitness equipment.
Shift
40 hours a week Monday - Friday; 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM. This position will require evening and weekend hours supporting activities and programs within the department. Occasionally division and campus projects may require additional hours outside of your normal schedule.
Minimum Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.
Preferred Qualifications
- A Master's degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Sports Management, Recreation, or related area. An equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.
- Three to five years experience working in a group fitness/personal training program in a collegiate recreation setting. Education in a related field may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
- Group Fitness certifications in multiple formats and/or National personal training certification.
- Proficient in InnoSoft Fusion, Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Teams, and Zoom.
- Demonstrated ability to be detail oriented, as well as handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Strong interpersonal skills, excellent presentation skills, and written and verbal communication skills.
Anticipated Hiring Range
