Overview
The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, located on the George H. Cook Campus, is one of the largest schools of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We pursue excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in areas of study that address the biological spectrum from molecules to ecosystems. Our emphasis is on both the fundamental sciences and the social and human dimensions. We offer 21 undergraduate majors, including plant and animal sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture and food systems, landscape architecture, food and nutritional sciences, ecology and evolution, marine science and oceanography, environmental sciences and meteorology, human ecology, entomology, and environmental economics.

In addition to instruction in the classroom, field, and laboratory, our students have opportunities for experiential learning on and off campus, including a growing emphasis on international experiences through short- and long-term study abroad. Students also have access to a robust program of applied research and outreach hosted by the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station laboratories, farms, business incubators, and marine stations throughout the state.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Field Researcher IV for the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences.

Among the key duties of the position are the following:

  • Participates in the planning, establishment and maintenance of field/greenhouse/growth chamber/laboratory experiments including field plot design, preparation, and implementation; weed and pest control; fertilization; harvest; any other maintenance requirements including farming equipment.
  • Supervises, trains and assigns duties to hourly employees to facilitate an efficient and productive weed science program.
  • Facilitates projects to coordinate data collection, experimental design and new experiment development.
  • Trains personnel to safely operate equipment used in the weed science research program.
  • Assists in the preparation, organization and coordination of the effective evaluation of large scale weed science field and greenhouse experiments, other research trials and spaced plants, including data collection, database maintenance, subsequent statistical analysis, and document preparation for publication.
  • Coordinates equipment use, preventative maintenance and repairs.
  • Participates in the requisition ordering of all field supplies, seeds, pesticides, fertilizers, laboratory chemicals and necessary supplies for the project.
  • Participates in field days, conferences, demonstrations, literature searches and visitor tours.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree preferably in Plant Science including course work in plant biology and /or plant ecology, or an equivalent combination of education.
Certifications/Licenses

  • Will be required to have a valid NJ DEP Pesticide Applicator's License (Category 3B).
  • A valid driver's license would be required for this position.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to be flexible and capable of carrying out several tasks or projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to reorganize tasks depending on weather, labor schedules and availability of resources. Ability to properly identify weed species and evaluate weed infestation in different cropping systems.
  • Ability to independently prepare chemicals necessary to control weeds and apply them with proper spraying equipment.
  • Good reading/writing skills.
  • Good interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience in proper experimental design.
  • Ability to follow to the letter research protocol as produced by chemical manufacturing companies or by the direct supervisor.
  • Knowledge of basic laboratory equipment and techniques including sterile techniques, seed preparation, and plant propagation and growth.
  • Basic knowledge of operation and basic maintenance of farming equipment including, but not restricted to, tractor, cultivator, mower, and crop transplanter.
  • Knowledge of computer applications such as Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.
  • Familiarity with proper data/statistical analysis of experiments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2 years' experience working with specialty crops (vegetables, small fruits, tree fruits or ornamentals) management in the field and in the greenhouse with emphasis on pests, disease or weed management.
  • 2 years of hands-on experience in the plant sciences including greenhouse, field and laboratory work.
  • Prior experience with vegetable, small fruits, tree fruits or ornamental species.
  • Knowledge and prior experience with layout and maintenance of field and greenhouse trials.
  • Experience with artificial intelligence, robotics, and emerging agricultural technologies.

Equipment Utilized
  • Familiarity with seeding and spraying equipment utilized in field and greenhouse research as well as precision scale, microscope, laminar flow hood or any other equipment used in the laboratory.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and endure strenuous physical activities in frequently adverse conditions.
