This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin's Blue Moon landers and related products. To further Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Challenge the status quo by identifying, developing, and implementing process improvements to drive reductions in cost and processing time while maintaining design intent and quality.
  • Work hands-on with processes such as welding, coating, plating, heat treatment, forging, casting, extrusion, and hydroforming to develop robust processing parameters and approaches.
  • Evaluate and select materials for usage in lunar hardware, considering mechanical properties, thermal properties, and environmental factors.
  • Collaborate closely with design, analysis, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and supply base to disposition nonconforming hardware and integrate material and process requirements into the overall vehicle or system design.
  • Identify root causes and disposition of nonconforming hardware; work proactively to identify and implement corrective and preventative actions, including repair of components for return to service.
  • Define and author material and/or process development and qualification plans to utilize novel materials and processes on lunar hardware.
  • Ensure specialized processes used in the manufacture of hardware have sufficient process controls to ensure a repeatable process.
  • Act as Materials & Processes signatory for engineering drawings for lunar hardware.
  • Perform development and qualification testing for materials to ensure performance under induced and external environmental requirements.
  • Train and empower production employees in manufacturing and developed repair techniques.
  • Promote and build a positive working relationship with hourly team members.
  • Stay informed on emerging technologies and industry trends relevant to lunar hardware.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering, Material Science Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
  • 5+ years of directly related experience in material and process engineering application in the aerospace industry.
  • Hands-on experience operating and supporting processing equipment such as heat treat furnaces, industrial robots, lasers, welding, chemical corrosion, and high-temperature material processing and forming equipment.
  • Proven experience developing and executing test plans for analysis and qualification of special processes and materials.
  • Experience as M&P approver of engineering drawings, writing and maintaining materials and process specifications, and/or work instructions.
  • Experience with automation and/or mechanization of processes.
  • Familiarity with standard methods of manufacturing, such as conventional machining, non-conventional machining, and inspections.
  • Experience with standard Non-Destructive Inspection (NDI) techniques (such as UT, RT, PT) including interpretation of results.
  • Knowledge of environmentally assisted degradation and standard methods for testing mechanical properties (including fatigue, fracture, creep, stress rupture) of metals.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters or PhD in Metallurgical Engineering, Material Science/Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
  • Experience in the production, manufacturing, testing, and assembly of hardware.
  • Experience working with Ni-based alloys, Cu-based alloys, and/or other aerospace materials used in lunar hardware manufacturing.
  • Demonstrated experience working in cross-functional teams.
  • Experience evaluating and implementing repairs and/or remanufacture on tested/flight service hardware.
  • Demonstrated experience (M&P signatory authority) on a flight production program.
  • Experience with aerospace quality management systems supporting lunar hardware.
  • Experience transitioning materials and processes from development to production.
  • Familiarity with NASA-STD-6016, NASA-STD-5009, and other manned aerospace materials & processes requirements.
  • Experience running ambient, elevated temperature, and cryogenic thermomechanical testing.
  • Knowledge of Design of Experiments (DOE) methods to optimize material performance and manufacturing processes.
  • Experience with statistical analysis for the preparation of design allowable.

Compensation Range for:

CO applicants is $107,707.00-$150,789.45;WA applicants is $117,498.00-$164,497.20
