Pharmacy Director: Ambulatory and Specialty Pharmacy Services

This Pharmacy Director role supports the objective of delivering safe, cost-effective and optimal medication therapy at VCU Health. They are responsible for overseeing the management of pharmacy teams at VCU Health in addition to pharmacy operations strategy, committees and other interdisciplinary groups involving pharmacy. They collaborate with the members of the pharmacy leadership team, service line leadership, nursing, and medical leadership in support of optimal patient care. The director coordinates all pharmacy services and programs to help obtain desirable patient outcomes through the use of safe, appropriate, and effective medication therapies. This position oversees pharmacy services, as assigned by the Chief Pharmacy Officer, , creating operational efficiencies, promoting standardization and safety and advancing pharmacy practices. This position supports the education mission of VCU Health by precepting pharmacy residents and students.

Essential Job Statements

Responsible for planning, coordinating, evaluating programs, managing resources, controlling costs, and driving quality improvement across all areas of oversight

Develops and achieves budgetary goals. Operates within approved budgets while maintaining fiscal accountability and identifying cost-saving opportunities.

Provides effective leadership across the pharmacy enterprise, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and fostering a culture of excellence and accountability

Champions innovation and leads organizational change initiatives. Develops and implements programs focused on continuous quality improvement, systems enhancements, and organizational stewardship.

Develops talent and coaches peers to foster professional growth and build leadership capacity within the pharmacy team.

Identifies and evaluates opportunities for growth within the pharmacy enterprise. Develops and executes strategic plans to expand services and enhance operational efficiency.

Ensures compliance with institutional, state, and federal regulations by developing, implementing, and monitoring policies and procedures. Establishes key performance indicators to assess and benchmark effectiveness.

Assessing and vetting additional drug cost optimization products or services (e.g., automation solutions) and collaborating with management to determine feasibility and implementation.

Performs other duties as assigned to support departmental and organizational objectives.

Patient Population: Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide equitable care appropriate to the age of the patients served on their assigned unit.

Employment Qualifications

Education Required:Pharmacy degree (B.S. and/or Pharm.D.) from an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredited academic program

Education Preferred:Master's degree

Licensing/ Certification

Licensure Required:Current licensure as a Pharmacist with the Virginia State Board of Pharmacy.

Minimum Qualifications

Years and Type of Required Experience: 7 years Management experience required. Specialized residency training in pharmacy administration will be considered toward required experience.
