*This position is restricted to City of Minneapolis employees within the Public Works Department* The Public Works Department is accepting applications for the full-time Public Works Service Worker II apprenticeship program. Upon successful completion of the 6,000-hour full-time apprenticeship program and passing an evaluation of their skills, candidates will be promoted to a vacant Public Works Service Worker II position. Note: Candidates are require to commit to completing the 6,000 hours before moving into the Public Works Service Worker II position.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

- As an apprentice you will learn to drive and operate a wide variety of heavy and light construction equipment and attached mechanical devices used in construction and maintenance work. Specialized equipment includes but is not limited to: Excavators, Bulldozers, Cranes, Loaders, Graders, Backhoes, Pavers, Forklifts, Rollers, Skid Steers
- Attend classroom training, complete workbook assignments and receive instruction and supervision in the safe operation of various pieces of motorized equipment; receive training in safe operating procedures, established safety methods and Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) regulations; lubricate and make adjustments to machinery and perform other related work as required.
This position requires attendance at mandatory training sessions at the Local #49 Training Center in Hinkley, Minnesota. Advance notice will be provided, and completion of the training hours is required for successful program completion.

Working Conditions: Exposure to all kinds and types of weather conditions; dirt, dust, odors, chemicals, vermin, insects' garbage, high noise levels, heavy traffic, etc. Frequent standing and walking for long periods of time on rough, uneven surfaces; frequent pushing/pulling, twisting, lifting and maneuvering of objects weighing up to , lifting and maneuvering of objects weighing up to 100 pounds; working in confined spaces; climbing in and out of manholes and/or vehicles as well as overhead; ability to climb, maneuver and/or work on ladders, stairs and platforms. Apprentices will be rotating across multiple Public Works divisions as part of their training, this may include working varying hours, weekends and holidays. Seniority: The City of Minneapolis and the Construction Equipment Operators and Mechanics Unit (IUOE)-Local49 agreement defines classification seniority as "the length of employment within a job classification and based on the date the employee began working in that classification on a permanent basis". The classification title of Public Works Service Worker II-Apprentice is a different classification title than Public Works Service Worker II. Time spent and seniority accrued while in the classification title Public Works Service Worker II- Apprentice does not count towards seniority in the Public Works Service Worker II classification.

Required Qualifications

Age: Applicants must be at least 18 years of age by application closing date. Minimum Experience: Applicants must have one year experience performing Public Works Service Worker I duties or equivalent laboring experience in a similar environment. Applicants must have successfully completed/passed probation and must be an employee of the Public Works department License : Valid Class "B" Commercial Driver's License or better with no air brake restrictions and a good driving record. Driving Record: Applicants should have a good driving record and no preventable motor vehicle accidents in the past 3 years to be eligible for the Apprentice Program. Selection Process: The examination/selection process for this position may consist of a rating of training and experience, or written exam (80%) and seniority (20%). Since the examination selection process may consist of a rating of training and experience, it is to your advantage to be as complete a thorough application form, supplemental questions. and other support documentation/materials as is possible. Minimum passing score 70.00. At each step of the selection process, the department reserves the right to limit the number of applicants to be tested. Interview Selection: The hiring authority reserves the right to determine the maximum number of candidates to interview from the established eligible list. If the hiring authority decides to interview other than by exam score order, they may select additional people to interview based on a candidate's education or experience related to the field, work history, or skills uniquely related to the operational needs of the position. Background Check: The City has determined that a criminal background check, and/or qualifications check maybe necessary for certain positions with this job title. Applicants may be required to sign an informed consent form allowing the City to obtain their criminal history and/or verify their qualifications in connection with the position sought. Applicants who do not sign the informed consent form will not be further considered for the position. Medical Exam: After a conditional job offer, candidates will be required to pass a medical examination which includes a physical screening. Union Representation: This position is represented by a collective bargaining agreement between the City of Minneapolis and Construction Equipment Operators and Mechanics Unit (IUOE)-Local49. Eligible List Statement: The names of applicants who meet minimum qualification and who pass the screening process shall be placed on the eligible list for employment consideration. This list will be certified to the hiring manager who may use the list to fill a vacancy of the same job title. This eligible list will expire 2 months after it has been established.

- Ability to work in confined spaces defined as tunnels (may work up to 8-10 hours/day in a tunnel)
- Ability to work and perform all jobs and scheduled as assigned
- Ability to work at heights, including on ladders, scaffolding or elevated structures.
