Cytology Lab Supervisor
Job Summary Under the guidance of the Directors, incumbent is responsible for managing the operations of the Cytology Laboratory, Radiology/OR rapid onsite interpretation for adequacy (RADS), and the Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) Clinic. Primary responsibilities which include the supervision of laboratory, RADS, and FNA Clinic operations; personnel; technical oversight of cytotechnologists; quality control; quality assurance; compliance with The Joint Commission and State requirements, including oversight of site visit preparations. In addition, it is the role of the supervisor to educate and role-model for trainees during their rotations. The incumbent serves as a lead technical expert in interpreting all gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens. The incumbent must have an extensive knowledge of the full scope of general Cytology technical duties in the laboratory when required (receiving specimens, accessioning, processing all specimen types, and troubleshooting specimen, order and billing issues). As supervisor, the incumbent recruits, hires, trains, completes performance evaluations, and resolves employee issues; provides orientation, completes competency assessments, maintains staff schedules, training and compliance documentation; implements new tests and procedures as requested by pathologists; updates and maintains the lab manuals and annual reviews required for accreditation; integrates new technologies into the laboratory to include analyzing and selection of new equipment that meets space constraints and operational needs; ensures that new equipment and associated validation and staff training are performed; all equipment is well-maintained; staff training and documentation are completed as required; QC documentation is complete and quality standards are maintained in the laboratory; proactively advises and assists researchers planning research projects and determines the ability of the laboratory to accommodate research projects. As directed, the incumbent provides operational support in the absence of the Assistant Director; as determined, works a variable schedule and rotates at other work sites as needed. Other duties as assigned. The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement. The salary range for this position is $122,000 - $258,000 (Annual Rate). Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in related degree
- CT (ASCP) certification
- State of California Department of Health Services Licensure
- Minimum 3 years of Cytology Supervisory experience and 5 years as a Cytotechnologist.
- Thin Prep Certification
- Demonstrates the highest level of technical and interpretive expertise in Cytology, exhibiting an extreme attention to detail and concentration
- Must be able to make independent and effective decisions in appropriate situations
- Ability to meet deadlines
- CAP or TJC inspection experience
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
- Ability to supervise and motivate others effectively
- Must have the ability to work together with a diverse set of physicians and departmental physician leadership to effectively developing new standards and protocols
- Strong interpersonal skills to interact effectively with physicians, technicians and a variety of hospital personnel and outside service and supply vendors
- Demonstrates analytical skills to assess, develop and implement procedures necessary to achieve established clinical objectives
- Demonstrates aptitude for troubleshooting and resolving complex management and diagnostic problems
- Work requires a high level of knowledge of laboratory regulations, as well as current technologies and techniques in the field of Cytology
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in business or related degree
- Minimum of 5 years of Cytology Supervisory experience in a laboratory with a high case volume with a wide specimen variety
- Experience at an academic medical center
- Familiarity with laboratory process improvement including Lean and Six Sigma
License/Certification
- CT (ASCP) Certification
- State of California Department of Health Services Licensure
- Thin Prep Certification
- Annual Proficiency Test required
