Position/Department Summary:
Plans, directs and executes operational plans of multiple unique laboratory sections for the Department of Laboratory Medicine encompassing the technical, regulatory/compliance and administrative support areas. Working with and through a team of direct managers/supervisors and medical/administrative staff, manages ongoing operational efficiencies and significant process improvement initiatives. Maintains compliance with the Joint Commission, federal, state, local and hospital regulatory agencies and other regulatory requirements across all labs. Additionally, assists the Executive Director in the management and fiscal oversight of the department. Reports to the Executive Director or Chief.

Key Responsibilities:

Planning

  • Partnering with the Executive Director and Chief to develop operational strategies aligned with the department's strategic goals.
  • Defining key performance metrics, identifying operational needs, and sets measurable goals to drive strategic initiatives.

Execution

  • Providing subject matter expertise to design workflows, resolving complex issues, and implementing operational improvements.
  • Leading change management efforts, including training and communication, to support successful execution of new initiatives.

Team Management

  • Overseeing staff development, performance management, and team structure through direct supervision or first-level managers.
  • Coaching and mentoring managers to build high-performing teams and foster long-term success across departments.

Compliance and Quality Programs

  • Ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, hospital policies, and safety protocols across all laboratory operations.
  • Directing quality assurance and improvement programs to maintain high standards in service delivery and patient safety.

Evaluation and Reporting

  • Monitoring operational effectiveness through data analysis, staff feedback, and performance metrics.
  • Providing regular updates on project status, implementation progress, and feasibility assessments to leadership.

Contracts/Agreements

  • Participating in contract reviews, negotiations, and vendor assessments to support departmental operations.
  • Assisting in designing and maintaining agreements with clinical partners, including financial arrangements and compliance terms.

Budgets

  • Collaborating with leadership to develop and monitor departmental operating and capital budgets.
  • Supporting cost containment through expense tracking, comparative analysis, and strategic resource planning.

Relationships

  • Building and maintaining key partnerships with internal stakeholders and external clinical or service organizations.
  • Serving as a liaison for the department, representing operational interests in cross-functional and external collaborations.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in related Science or Healthcare Management discipline required
  • Master's degree preferred
  • Public Health or Business Administration preferred
  • Certified Public Accountant preferred

Experience:

  • 8 years of progressive medical laboratory management required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Expertise across multiple areas of laboratory operations.
  • TJC/CAP regulatory expertise.
  • Master of QA/QI concepts and methodologies

Certification/Registration Required:

  • ASCP Laboratory certification, general or subspecialty
