Job Description

We're seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Assistant Vice President of Environmental Underwriting to help lead profitable growth within our Environmental portfolio. This role blends hands-on underwriting with strategic leadership-partnering with brokers, shaping portfolio performance, and developing underwriting talent.

What You'll Do

  • Drive profitable growth by achieving monthly and annual production, profitability, and portfolio performance goals, including GWP, Loss Ratio, and Combined Ratio objectives

  • Underwrite and analyze new and renewal Environmental business while ensuring disciplined risk selection and pricing

  • Lead broker engagement and marketing efforts by strengthening existing relationships, developing new partnerships in targeted territories, and representing the organization in broker and client meetings

  • Monitor economic conditions, legal developments, and insurance market trends to inform underwriting strategy and decision-making

  • Manage and develop a team of professional underwriters, including hiring, coaching, performance management, and ongoing professional development

  • Foster a collaborative, accountable, and high-performance team culture aligned with business objectives

  • Contribute to departmental business planning, special projects, and strategic initiatives as needed

What You Bring

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university and 8+ years of underwriting experience, including underwriting and marketing responsibilities (or equivalent combination of education and experience)

  • Demonstrated success contributing to underwriting profitability and portfolio management

  • Experience developing and executing an annual business or department plan

  • Proven leadership skills, including mentoring, coaching, and performance management

  • Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and presentation skills

  • Customer-focused mindset with the ability to collaborate across teams and organizational levels

  • Willingness and ability to travel as needed, sometimes on short notice

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook

  • Experience with ImageRight, Guidewire, or similar underwriting systems preferred

  • Comfortable working with underwriting platforms, support systems, and basic workflow or programming concepts

Compensation & Benefits

The base salary range listed applies to New York hires and will be commensurate with experience. Compensation for other locations may vary based on market conditions.

  • New York Pay Range: $185,900-$223,100

  • Annual performance-based bonus
