Are you a visionary database architect ready to shape the future of data at this kind of scale? We're looking for a Senior Staff Database Architect to lead the forward evolution of our enterprise data platform-centered around Google BigQuery. In this high-impact role, you'll work independently and collaboratively to architect cutting-edge solutions that power critical business insights, drive innovation, and set the standard for data excellence.

As our go-to BigQuery subject matter expert (SME), you'll guide the strategic direction of our cloud data initiatives, mentor a talented team of database professionals, and champion best practices in performance, scalability, and cost-efficiency. This is a unique opportunity to influence the future of data architecture at massive scale, with sensitive financial data that matters to us all.

The salary range for this position is $154,450-$200,000 and will be determined based on location and experience level. This position may be worked remotely within the United States.

What you'll be responsible for:

  • Leads the design and implementation of high-performance data platforms. Serving as the lead subject matter expert (SME) for all Google BigQuery-related initiatives, including design, implementation, and optimization.
  • Architects and implements innovative design and development of high-volume transaction processing systems and data warehousing ensuring scalability, performance, and cost-efficiency within the Google Cloud ecosystem.
  • Drives the adoption of emerging database technologies and methodologies. Leading the automation of data engineering processes within BigQuery, such as establishing efficient and reliable data pipelines.
  • Leads and mentors a team of database architects and engineers championing BigQuery data management.
  • Oversees reviews of database check-ins ensuring conformance to standards, best practices, and design and performance objectives. Setting the standard for data quality and governance within BigQuery datasets and related systems.
  • Leads the team in collaboration efforts and consultations with developers in the areas of BigQuery integration and data accessibility.
  • Leads the establishment and maintenance of a culture of continuous improvement in database development processes.
  • Defines and implements cloud-first data strategies for the organization.
  • May perform other job duties as assigned.

What you'll need to have:

  • Minimum of 13 years of experience in database programming, architecture, or data engineering.
  • Minimum of 3 years of hands-on, expert-level experience with Google BigQuery, including advanced SQL, data modeling, performance optimization, and administration.

What would be nice for you to have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
  • Applicable Google Cloud Platform (GCP) certifications (e.g., Google Cloud Professional Data Engineer) preferred.
  • Broad expertise and unique knowledge in cloud data warehousing, specifically as a subject matter expert (SME) in Google BigQuery.
  • Experience working on highly complex and diverse data projects, requiring in-depth analysis of situations and data within the BigQuery environment.
  • Exercises independent judgment in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining solutions in BigQuery.
  • Proven experience with the automation of data processes, particularly within Google Cloud and BigQuery using tools like Dataflow, Cloud Composer, or Cloud Functions.
  • Expert knowledge of relational database concepts and highly proficient in SQL, with extensive experience optimizing queries for BigQuery's columnar architecture.
  • Proficiency in at least one scripting or programming language (e.g., Python, Java, Go) for data manipulation and BigQuery API interaction.
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring and leading technical teams, with a proven ability to transfer complex technical knowledge effectively.
  • Excellent understanding of data warehousing principles, ETL/ELT processes, and schema design, specifically applied to BigQuery.
