Summary

Hitachi Research Institute (HRI) is seeking a Director to lead its strategic research and globalization efforts in the United States. In this role, you will drive the HRI's expansion in the world by monitoring and analyzing critical uncertainties across markets, policy, technology, industry, and environmental trends. You will assess their impact on Hitachi's current business portfolio, identify emerging opportunities and risks, and develop forward-looking scenarios and strategic recommendations to enhance Hitachi's position in the world.

Working in the US, you will find yourself in a team-based environment in the US and will engage with the Tokyo head office of HRI remotely via online meetings on a daily basis, as well as in-person meetings by trips to Tokyo on a time-to-time basis.

Responsibilities

Lead and conduct the research activities of HRI, mainly under the HRI' self-funded research projects as well as the business-unit-funded research projects (some of which are expected be secured by the initiative of the Director). The activities include, but not limited to, the followings:

  • Collect and organize the information on critical uncertainties on the mid/long-term trend of market, government policy/geopolitics, finance, technology, industry and energy & environment in the world including North America.

  • Identify critical uncertainties for Hitachi, and opportunity/threat for Hitachi through the comparison with the present status of business strategy of Hitachi in the world including North America.

  • Build scenarios on i) potential emerging or critical market areas, including stake holders (governments, customers, competitors, etc.) and Hitachi business opportunities, and ii) potential threats to Hitachi's market opportunities and operations. The scenarios are made in in-depths discussions with the relevant Hitachi group people.

  • Propose Hitachi strategy: work out the measures to capture opportunities and reduce threats and study the revisions on the existing business strategy and plan of Hitachi.

Requirements

  • Proven experiences as a leader of strategy building at the business enterprise or strategy consultant, or their equivalents, for at least 10 years.

  • Comprehensive knowledge and ability to collect, organize, interpret and analyze the diverse business environment matters such as government policy/geopolitics, finance, technology, industry and energy & environment, with mid/long-term views.

  • Demonstrable ability to apprehend the interrelations of a business environment matter with others, and its potential impacts on the company both in terms of opportunities and threats.

  • Established personal ties and channels with relevant experts so as to collect the information on diverse business environment matters.

  • Proven experience of team management and excellent interpersonal communication skills.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Offices applications (PowerPoint, Word, Excel).

  • Strong command of English, both verbal and written communication.

  • Some co-work experiences with Japanese and the knowledge about Japan/Japanese culture/Japanese language are preferred.

  • BSc/BA in business administration or relevant field; MSc/MA is preferred.

Pay is determined based on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, depth of experience in the practice area. Employees are eligible to participate in Hitachi America's variable pay program, subject to the program's conditions and restrictions
