Your Job

As a Senior Protection & Controls (P&C) Engineer at DEPCOM Power, you will lead the design, specification, and implementation of protection and control systems for high-voltage substations supporting utility-scale Solar and Battery Energy Storage (BESS) projects. You will be responsible for developing detailed relay protection schemes, SCADA integration, logic diagrams, and communication architectures and associated studies and calculations. This is a technical leadership position that plays a critical role in enabling DEPCOM's in-house engineering model by delivering high-quality, cost-effective, and constructible substation control and protection systems. This position will act as a senior level member of the team by engineering, creating scalable processes, mentoring and collaborating to complete project designs and ensure successful project execution.

What You Will Do

Protection System Design

  • Design protection schemes for high-voltage substations including line, transformer, bus, breaker failure, and overcurrent protection.
  • Develop one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, and relay logic.
  • Specify and program protection relays (e.g., SEL, GE, ABB) in coordination with system studies.
  • Perform calculations and coordination studies using software such as ETAP, SKM or ASPEN.
  • Perform substation studies and calculations: ac/dc sizing, load flow analysis, short circuit analysis, reactive compensation analysis, system protection coordination, arc flash hazard analysis, harmonic resonance analysis, insulation coordination, transient over voltage studies, and emt studies.

Control System and SCADA Integration

  • Develop substation control systems including breaker control, status indication, alarms, and interlocking.
  • Interface with SCADA/RTU/PLC systems and develop point lists, logic diagrams, and communication schemes.
  • Coordinate with SCADA team and utilities to ensure integration meets communication and cybersecurity standards.

Standards and Quality Assurance

  • Ensure compliance with IEEE, NERC, NEC, NESC, and utility-specific standards for protection and control systems.
  • Review vendor submittals, perform quality assurance on I&C devices, and validate relay settings.
  • Develop and maintain P&C engineering standards, design templates, and internal QA/QC processes.

Collaboration and Field Support

  • Support field installation and commissioning of protection and control systems.
  • Participate in relay testing, point-to-point checks, and energization procedures.
  • Respond to field RFIs, troubleshoot system issues, and verify as-built documentation. Participate in substation equipment factory acceptance testing (FAT) and field commissioning support as needed.
  • Support procurement by developing technical equipment specifications for transformers, breakers, and control enclosures.

Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • Experience with relay platforms and related software.
  • Experience in substation protection system design, calculations and coordination studies. (e.g. ETAP, or SKM)
  • Ability to travel up to 15% for site support, FATs, and commissioning.

What Will Put You Ahead

  • PE license or ability to obtain within 1 year.
  • Experience in utility interconnection protection schemes.
  • Experience with RTAC/SEL-3530, DNP3, Modbus, and IEC 61850 protocols.
  • Familiarity with SCADA and substation automation architectures.
  • Proficiency in SEL, ABB, or GE relay platforms and
  • Knowledge of relevant codes and standards.
  • Experience in design-build or self-perform EPC substation projects.
  • Experience with system arc flash studies using ETAP or SKM
  • Experience with AC auxiliary, and DC load sizing, battery charger calculations
  • Experience reviewing and writing testing and commission plans for protection and control circuits
