Position Summary

The University of Southern Indiana is accepting applications forLearning Specialist, Student-Athlete Academic Services.

The Learning Specialist is responsible for providing proactive academic support and individualized learning strategies for student-athletes, particularly those with diagnosed learning disabilities and/or are considered academically at risk. This position plays a key role in fostering academic success and NCAA eligibility through targeted interventions, academic coaching, and collaboration with university support services.

Duties/Responsibilities



  • Develop, implement, and monitor individualized academic support plans including learning strategies, study skills, time management, and goal setting.
  • Collaborate with Disability Resources and other university departments to ensure appropriate accommodations and services are delivered.
  • Design and deliver structured study programs and learning workshops tailored to student-athlete needs.
  • Track academic performance, maintain accurate records, and communicate with coaches regarding student-athlete academic status.
  • Maintain compliance with NCAA, FERPA, conference, and institutional guidelines regarding academic integrity and student-athlete eligibility.
  • Foster an inclusive and supportive learning environment, demonstrating respect for diverse cultural and educational backgrounds.
  • Review and evaluate incoming and returning student-athlete documentation, and identify at-risk student-athletes.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Required Knowledge and Skills



  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Psychology, Special Education, Counseling, or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of learning differences, educational planning, and study skills development.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to build rapport with diverse student populations and collaborate across departments.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced academic environment.
  • Technologically proficient with Microsoft Office and student tracking systems (e.g., Banner, Degree Works, Teamworks).


Preferred Knowledge and Skills



  • Master's degree in Special Education, Counseling, Higher Education, or a related field.
  • At least one year of experience in academic advising, learning support, or student services in a collegiate setting.
  • Experience working with student-athletes, particularly at the NCAA Division I level.
  • Familiarity with educational testing and academic skill assessments; ability to assist with the coordination of psychoeducational evaluations as needed.
  • Knowledge of current evidence-based practices for at-risk populations


Regular Work Hours/Travel Requirements


  • University office hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
  • This position may involve evening and weekend hours based on student-athlete schedules.
