Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) Division has an opening for an Operations Technology Group Lead (OTG) to join the team. NERSC's mission is to accelerate scientific discovery through high performance computing and data analysis for the DOE Office of Science programs. NERSC provides critical HPC and data systems and support for NERSC's 11,000 users researching alternative energy sources, climate science, energy efficiency, environmental science and other DOE mission areas. NERSC is seeking an inspiring leader for the Operations Technology Group who will contribute to the vision and guidance for the data collection, monitoring, and observability during this time of transition to exascale architectures and beyond. The OTG Group Lead leads a team to manage the 24x7 monitoring of the NERSC systems and facilities to support the NERSC mission. OTG works with other NERSC groups to design, prepare and monitor dashboards from various systems and services using the in-house monitoring data lake system and other tools. As a member of the NERSC leadership team, the OTG Group Lead collaborates with other Group Lead internally and externally to contribute to a strategy for designing, implementing, and maintaining the data lake and monitoring infrastructure for services provided to our customer base. What You Will Do:
Contribute to strategy, development and maintenance of data lake architecture and monitoring infrastructure at NERSC in support of NERSC's strategic goals. Lead cross-organizational, long-term projects supporting important deliverables. Exercise independent judgment in methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Responsible for 24x7 operations and monitoring, processes and execution at the Group level, providing leadership and guidance for site reliability engineering (SRE) staff, as well as operating and maintaining the NERSC ticketing system. The Operations Technology Group (OTG) Group Lead works with SREs to assign and prioritize work, identify and resolve obstacles and manage risk. Lead the evaluation, development and implementation of SRE technical and service designs and operations practices. Ensure alignment with architectural and operational strategies, ensure standard operational practices are well communicated and integrated into day-to-day activities. Conduct design reviews as appropriate. Provide process guidance and support to the SRE team for procurements, including scope of work development, RFPs, RFIs, etc. when needed. Support the Department Head in budget development and management by forecasting procurements, and guiding engineers in executing procurements. Participate in technical vendor management, and Operations teams. May lead/participate in vendor operational reviews. Provide effective line management for the group by hiring excellent staff, mentoring, supporting professional development, and conducting performance management. Assure staff are meeting goals and provide both positive and constructive feedback to staff.
What is Required:
Typically requires a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Business or related field, and/or equivalent experience. A minimum of three years of experience in a lead/supervisory role. Knowledge and experience with complex data lake and monitoring architecture, systems, and services design and support. Experience guiding architecture, engineering, and service strategy development. Ability to collaborate across multiple stakeholders in developing infrastructure and service strategies. Strong implementation project management experience. Demonstrated experience delivering presentations to senior management and/or large stakeholders. Demonstrated ability to work independently, able to determine what is needed to fulfill high level outcomes and direct others. Able to work on multiple high-profile projects and respond to rapidly changing priorities. Ability to coordinate and lead all activities of the group and work on and resolve significant and unique issues where analysis of situations or data requires an evaluation of intangibles. Excellent oral and written communication skills and a demonstrated history of working effectively with other teams on common goals. Demonstrated experience in hiring, training, and mentoring technical staff. Excellent skills operating and maintaining a 24x7 operation in a production environment; with a focus on continuous improvement and metric-driven operations performance management. Knowledge of ServiceNow issue tracking system a plus.

Appointment Type: This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay. Salary Information: This position is expected to pay $168,564.00-$210,720.00, which fits within the full salary range of $168,564.00-$284,472.00 for the C70.7. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, and aligned with the internal peer group.
