POSITION SPECIFICS

Job description: aphasia post

The Sathian Lab at the Penn State College of Medicine, Department of Neurology, Hershey, PA, is looking for a highly motivated non-tenure line Researcher to work on language processing studies and, in particular, on novel rehabilitation approaches to aphasia.

The Sathian lab employs both behavioral and neuroimaging (functional magnetic resonance imaging: fMRI) methods to investigate iconicity in spoken language - the idea that the sound of a word may convey its meaning - in both neurotypical people and people with aphasia. The successful candidate will have a PhD in a relevant field and 5 years of post-doctoral experience in sensory and language processing, statistical analyses, MATLAB, and fMRI analyses using SPM (including the ability to implement multivariate methods). Since experience in working with patients with aphasia is critical, they must also have certification in Supported Conversation for Adults with Aphasia, obtained via the practicum run by the Aphasia Institute (ON, Canada). The successful candidate will also have strong written and oral communication skills, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Design, execution, and analysis of behavioral and fMRI studies.
  • Recruiting and testing participants in person and remotely using virtual platforms, with sensitivity to the special needs of people with language disorders
  • Preparation of manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Presentation of research findings at scientific conferences and other meetings.
  • Collaboration with clinicians, including speech-language pathologists, neuropsychologists, and neurologists.
  • General research group duties.

BACKGROUND CHECKS/CLEARANCES

Employment with the University will require successful completion of background check(s) in accordance with University policies.
