This role is critical to supporting our Zero Carbon Plan, and we are looking for a highly motivated and engaged individual to lead our distribution planning efforts. The Manager will oversee a team of engineers responsible for developing effective strategies and plans that enhance the safety and reliability of SMUD's power system. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, working collaboratively to create and implement plans and projects to accommodate development and load growth within the service territory while ensuring adherence to federal and state regulations. The ideal candidate for the Manager of Distribution Planning position will possess strong leadership skills and a deep understanding of distribution system planning and/or operations. They will be adept at evaluating the status of SMUD's power system and employing advanced tools and techniques to address grid conditions effectively, ensuring optimal system performance. The successful candidate will leverage their expertise to analyze complex technical challenges and apply engineering principles to devise innovative solutions. Furthermore, they must demonstrate proficiency in interpreting and applying relevant federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations, alongside excellent communication skills to convey technical information clearly and effectively. The ability to foster and maintain productive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders is essential to this role. Purpose
Provides management and accountability for the development of short-term and long-term capacity plans for SMUD's distribution and sub-transmission systems to ensure there is sufficient capacity to serve existing and future electrical demands in a safe, efficient and reliable manner. Manages the distribution and sub-transmission system planning process from engineering assessment of current system performance, forecast of future demands on the system, identification of system needs and alternative solutions, to the development of a cost effective five-year system capacity plan that achieves SMUD's strategic objectives. Fundamentals and practices of electrical engineering applied to transmission and distribution asset management, operations and distribution planning; Federal, State and local safety and hazardous waste laws, codes and regulations including Cal-OSHA, G.O. 95, 128 and 165 regulations; safety policies, practices and procedures; industry best practices related to distribution and transmission planning, design, construction, maintenance, and operations; project management, metrics and unit cost development; fundamentals of business strategic planning and development; fundamentals and practices of economic evaluation of projects and programs; fundamentals and practices of program evaluation; basic budgeting techniques; fundamentals and practices for delegating, prioritizing, assigning, and reviewing work assignments; fundamentals and practices for engaging, coaching, mentoring, training, and developing team members; process design and fundamentals for continuous process improvement.
