STV is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Systems Engineering Intern to join our Traction Power Engineering team. This internship is a valuable opportunity for undergraduate or graduate-level candidates in Electrical Engineering or Systems Engineering to gain direct experience in the design, analysis, and development of rail traction power and electrical distribution systems. You'll work under the mentorship of senior engineers and contribute to meaningful transportation infrastructure projects. Preference will be given to students who can commit to at least 3 months, work full-time, and be present in the office at least 3 days per week. Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the development of AC and DC power system design documents, including:
    • Single-line diagrams, schematics, substation layout, conduit routing, cable schedules, and wiring drawings.
  • Help prepare engineering calculations and studies, such as load flow, short-circuit, protective relay coordination, arc-flash analysis, and step-and-touch potential assessments.
  • Support the creation of engineering specifications, reports, and installation/testing instructions.
  • Contribute to the preparation of cost estimates and assist in technical proposal development.
  • Participate in field visits, including inspections and data collection in live high-voltage substations and active railroad environments (under supervision and in compliance with safety regulations).
  • Support CAD drawing development using AutoCAD or MicroStation.
  • Gain experience with commercial engineering software tools such as ETAP, SKM, or MathCAD for modeling and simulations.
  • Assist with project documentation, file management, and coordination with internal teams and external clients.
  • Participate in design review meetings, testing observations, and client interactions alongside senior staff.
Required:
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related discipline at an ABET-accredited university.
  • Strong interest in traction power, electrical distribution systems, or transportation infrastructure.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Basic familiarity with AutoCAD or MicroStation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to follow OSHA and rail safety protocols (training will be provided).
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Coursework or project experience in power systems, circuit analysis, or railway engineering.
  • Exposure to engineering modeling tools like ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, or MathCAD.
  • Interest in rail electrification, utility systems, or public transportation projects.
  • Experience with technical documentation or engineering reports.

Compensation Range:

$44,767.00 - $59,689.00
