Department Description

The Anatomy Learning Center (ALC) is a 6,000-square-foot space that opened in 2012 with state-of-the-art architecture, featuring a 36-air-exchange per hour ventilation system, a multipurpose room, HD screens, energy-regenerating sinks, accessible power outlets, and floods of natural light. The main laboratory houses 32 dissection tables, a pre-room, and two locker rooms. Our audio-visual projection system links iPads to six 72-inch HD screens and overhead speakers, which allow faculty to conduct anatomy demos and show detailed anatomical structures to 70+ students at once. Students have after-hours access to the lab and its digital resources including faculty-designed lab guides, anatomy exploration apps and internet access. A Skywall can be lowered to separate two sides of the lab. This feature is often utilized to accommodate surgical training with unembalmed specimens while students can continue to independently study on the other side. Simultaneous classes, independent study, training and research often occur in the ALC.

The Center is managed by the Office of Medical Education which oversees all health professions education programs for the School of Medicine and includes 1,200 teaching faculty, 650 medical students, 1700 residents and fellows and 30,000 continuing education activities each year. For the past ten years, UCSF has been the only medical school ranked in the top five for research and for primary care training. The Office of Medical Education sets all strategic directives for medical education across the enterprise. OME is responsible for ensuring the highest quality learning and teaching environment for our programs and the support and development of over 110 staff.
