Summary
Performs donor registration, screenings, product shipment, whole blood collection, and automated platelet collections. Responsible for the performance of donor room procedures under the direction of the charge nurse/tech and follows Standard Operating Procedures. Able to balance production, donor care, and quality requirements to meet annual blood collection goals. The Blood Donor Technician complies with AABB standards, FDA regulations, and other regulatory agency guidelines. Does this position require Patient Care? Yes Essential Functions -Interviews donors to determine eligibility according to the donor selection criteria of the departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and conducts a medical history and physical examination. -Follows established criteria for the temporary/permanent deferral of donors to prevent inadvertent collection from a donor who is ineligible. -Performs whole blood collection using established sterile technique in preparation of phlebotomy site and performs platelet pheresis collection using the apheresis system. -Performs daily quality control, including daily scale calibration and other equipment used in the selection and collection process. Responsible for the documentation and corrective action as needed. -May work on mobile blood drives at locations throughout Massachusetts, and assist in maintaining adequate inventory of necessary supplies for the Donor Center and Off-Site Mobile Blood Drives. -Transports blood products to the blood bank, follows all safety and infection control policies, maintains a clean work area, and performs other duties as required. -Maintains professional image at all times and serves as a role model to colleagues. -Functions as a preceptor for training new blood donor technicians and/or precepting students. -Provides leadership and impacts the workplace in a positive manner, while working as a team with lead tech, charge nurse, and fellow colleagues.
