Job Summary:
A center for global excellence in undergraduate and graduate education and research, Northwestern's Department of Chemistry seeks a self-directed administrative professional to help support its mission. The Accounting Assistant supports the research operations for a group of Chemistry faculty, ensuring the smooth functioning of the labs and a positive experience for all group members. The Accounting Assistant works in a collaborative team environment under the supervision of the Senior Financial Administrator.
This position is a full-time position at 40 hours per week that works largely on-site with some opportunities for remote work.
The target hiring range for this position will be between $35,600 - $50,000 per year, which is $17.05 - 23.98 per hour. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data
Specific Responsibilities:
- Financial: Primary responsibilities include processing accounts payable transactions, entering requisitions, submitting online vouchers, wire transfers, handling visitor expense reports, monthly nitrogen meter readings, and managing the complete purchase order process. The role also assists with administrative tasks, and supports faculty, staff, students, and vendors with financial inquiries, financial procedures, and order-related functions. These tasks support the Department to allow for proper financial accounting and to ensure proper compliance protocols are followed within university enterprise systems.
- Administration: This position provides comprehensive administrative and clerical support to faculty, staff, students, and vendors. Responds to inquiries regarding financial processes and documentation, offers excellent customer service both in person and digitally. Prepares and distributes routine correspondence and forms, organizes and maintains financial documentation, submission, tracking, and resolution.
- Standard three days in office: This position works onsite three days per week and two days remotely, with the option of more onsite days if preferred.

Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or the equivalent.
- 1 year accounting &/or bookkeeping or other relevant experience
Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)
- Excellent computer skills including proficiency in the use of spreadsheet, database and word processing software

- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within the NU community and vendors.
- Ability to exhibit competency in reasoning numerical data and process-related functions.
- Ability to work independently, with minimal direct supervision.
