About the Position

The Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Network Administrator designs, manages, and maintains MCDOT's ITS Wide Area Network (WAN), Local Area Network (LAN), fiber optic, and wireless communications infrastructure. In addition, the position is responsible for the technical deployment, integration, testing, and evaluation of MCDOT ITS systems and devices. This role also supervises the ITS Network Engineer, who provides operational support of the ITS network infrastructure in the TMC, and ITS devices and infrastructure in the field. This position participates in an on-call rotation for after-hours network issue resolution.

We Require

  • Four years of related electronics, operational technology, or IT/ITS installation and maintenance experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Electronics, or a related field

  • An equivalent combination of post-secondary education and/or job-related experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis

  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Arizona driver's license at the time of hire

Job Contributions

  • Responsible for daily management of the Traffic Management Center (TMC) ITS domain and related user services, including direct and VPN connections to internal and external users of MCDOT ITS. Develops and maintains IP addressing plans for all ITS devices

  • Train the TMC staff and provide operations support as needed. Manage consultant tasks, audit their network access, and approve invoices. Work closely with the department's IT support team (ITC, ETI). Recommend and evaluate equipment and devices for procurement. Supervise the ITS Network Engineer, who provides operational support of the ITS network infrastructure in the TMC, and ITS devices and infrastructure in the field

  • Support ITS development through systems and engineering analysis, testing and documentation, database development, and system support. Deploy, install, test, and integrate switches, routers, and other active electronic devices into the network to support wired and wireless communications. Design the network configuration and install, test, and integrate firewall, network authentication, and remote access appliances into the network to support the security of the communications system. Collaborate with ITC to ensure compliance with county InfoSec and infrastructure best practices

  • Keep records of system and device operations and work performed. Develop and maintain routine system performance reports. Design, deploy, integrate, maintain, and upgrade the TMC routers, switches, firewalls, security appliances, and other devices that support the TMC staff

  • Serve as a lead for the deployment of fiber optic, wireless, and cellular communications, field sensors, CCTV cameras, Dynamic Message Signs, traffic signal controller integration, and other ITS telecommunications infrastructure deployment

  • Review technical reports, proposals, documents, and assure plans comply with ITS technical specifications and system architecture. Assist with project scope definition, technical procurement issues, and contract management. Prepares and produces technical reports, proposals, Scopes of Work, and other documents related to management, procurement, and vendors

  • Manage regional traffic network interfaces through planning and coordination support. Responsible for designing, deploying, implementing, and managing the use of wireless, fiber optic infrastructure, twisted-pair copper, leased lines, and cellular modem communications

  • Design and implement TMC hardware virtualization solutions. Provide Connected Vehicle (CV) technology support to advance the MCDOT SMARTDrive ProgramSM. Provide technical operations and maintenance of advanced transportation systems, including traffic signal systems, network communications, closed-circuit television camera infrastructure, and data exchange interfaces, as well as new and emerging technologies; assure the reliable operation of the ITS infrastructure to provide traffic management, traveler information, and incident response services

  • Prepare, review, and assess network expansion plans for ITS and provide LAN and WAN network design, integration, maintenance, and troubleshooting in coordination with ITC to ensure the best quality of service and adherence to county best practices

  • Coordinate between the Traffic Maintenance Group, the Traffic Operations Branch, the signal manufacturers' support team, and the ITC as needed to troubleshoot and resolve communication problems

  • Other job duties as assigned

Working Conditions

  • Exerting up to 20 pounds occasionally, 10 pounds frequently, or negligible amounts constantly, or requires walking or standing to a significant degree

  • Incumbent may be subjected to extreme temperatures, wetness/humidity, respiratory hazards, and noise and vibration
