Job Summary


Under the supervision of the Manager the Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) utilizes the nursing process to assess and identify the individual needs of patients through observation of disease symptoms, emotional state, laboratory reports, cultural and socio-economic background and response to medical regimen and treatment. Additionally, they are required to learn and apply the Patient-Centered Medical Home Standards and Ten Building Blocks of Primary Care. They are responsible for providing nursing care to patients in the ambulatory setting. The LVN will work as an important member of the care team, working closely with the RN and the physicians to deliver all components of nursing care, individualized to meet the patient's physiological and psychosocial developmental level and needs. The LVN will be responsible for chart abstraction. The LVN consistently projects a professional and courteous demeanor and shall comply with the Medical Center House and Telephone Standards. In addition, they will have clinical responsibility for administration of medications/vaccines, lab result review and monitoring, treatments, and procedures pertinent to pediatric & adult primary care, such as ear irrigations, wound care and urethral catheterization, as well as patient education. The LVN must have flexibility to cover multiple UCSF medical center clinic sites.

This individual will utilize their good customer service and communication skills daily via phone/electronic contact, mail correspondence, and personal contact with both internal and external customers. They will utilize computer skills in ApeX and other UCSF computerized programs. This individual supports the standards of the policies and procedures of the practice and is responsible for maintaining current knowledge of pharmacology and competency in modes of administration and complies with all Ambulatory Services and Medical Center policies and procedures for infection control, safety, and administrative and clinical practice. They are required to adhere to the Telephone and House Standards as adopted by the Medical Center, as well as demonstrating UCSF's PRIDE values and the AIDET fundamentals of communication in all patient care and stakeholder interactions
The Licensed Vocational Nurse must interact effectively with a diverse, very high-profile population including senior business leaders, major donors, politicians, UCSF senior leadership, providers and all staff levels. The LVN must exhibit grace under pressure, diplomacy, kindness and compassion to others while working under extreme deadlines, scheduling constraints, and urgent clinical and/or patient personal needs.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $45.15 - 56.67 (Hourly Rate).

Required Qualifications


  • Minimum 2 years of experience as a Licensed Vocational Nurse in Primary Care/Family Practice ambulatory setting
  • Knowledge and abilities that are essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position, including demonstrated excellent communication skills, problem-solving ability, and high comfort level with learning recent technology/systems.
  • Basic computer/keyboarding skills with Windows-based software including Microsoft word, Excel, Outlook.
  • Prior experience with electronic systems/records.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Trained and licensed to perform phlebotomy
  • Demonstrated ability to provide highly personalized patient care
  • Demonstrated ability to work as an integral part of a patient care team.
  • Demonstrated communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Ability to meet physical requirements identified below.
  • Proficient in APEX.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Familiarity with the principles of a Patient-Centered Medical Home environment.

License/Certification


  • Active Licensed Vocational Nurse licensure in the State of California
  • Active American Heart Association CPR Certification
