Overview
Tufts At Tech Community Veterinary Clinic, a veterinary teaching clinic operated by Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine of Tufts University, provides high quality primary and preventive veterinary care to underserved pets in greater Worcester. Located inside Worcester Technical High School, the clinic also provides experiential learning and work experience for Tufts' 4th year veterinary students and the veterinary technician assisting students of Worcester Technical High School.
What You'll Do
The veterinary technician is responsible for providing high quality nursing care in a team approach and supporting the 4th year veterinary students as well as veterinary assistant students in technical and animal handling practices. Strong working knowledge of surgical / radiology protocol is required. Strong phlebotomy and organizational skills are required. This 35-hour per-week position will also be responsible for assisting operations at the front desk. Essential Functions for the Veterinary Technician will be: Patient Care / Technical Support
- In a teach-while-doing model, performs routine veterinary nursing care and technical skills involving patient monitoring and treatment of medicine and surgical primary care cases, without supervision of a supervising technician or an attending veterinarian. Specific veterinary nursing and technical skills include patient restraint, venipuncture, anesthesia monitoring, dental cleaning, radiology, bench top diagnostics, and related medical records entries.
- Collaborates with administrative and clinical care team members throughout the clinic to coordinate and prioritize patient care.
- Completes 6 hours of CE annually.
- Completes 2 hours of non-technical learning and professional development annually.
Front Desk Operations and Direction of Students
- Using a teach-by-doing model, performs client support functions including reception, phone triage, client check-in / check-out, billing, and cash handling.
Operations Support
- In a teach-by-doing model, ensures that the clinic is fully stocked, clean, and orderly by maintaining an adequate inventory of medical supplies and pharmaceuticals, and cleaning / maintaining clinical areas.
- Facilitates the maintenance of clinical equipment (surgery, anesthesia, radiology, dental, blood machines, etc.) by identifying malfunctioning equipment and scheduling service.
- Works directly with vendors for repair and troubleshooting equipment problems.
Other
- Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
What We're Looking For
Basic Requirements:
- High School diploma or equivalent and 3 years of experience as a veterinary technician OR an associate or bachelor's degree from an AVMA-accredited institution providing training in veterinary technology, veterinary nursing, or veterinary science plus 1 year of experience as a veterinary technician OR a Certified Veterinary Technician in good standing.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently when completing basic tasks and procedural skills, and ability to conduct more advanced tasks under supervision.
- Comprehensive understanding of medical terminology and veterinary pharmacology.
- Demonstrated ability to provide excellent service to both internal and external customers.
- Ability to be flexible to accommodate variable job duties and unpredictable workdays.
- Strong organizational skills, strong professional communication skills, and the ability to deliver and receive constructive feedback.
- Knowledge of or willingness to learn clinical laboratory techniques.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds with or without accommodation.
- CORI background check is required.
- A desire to teach, including sharing knowledge and expertise with colleagues and students. Teaching also requires a commitment to ongoing professional development such as participation in Continuing Education and maintenance of credentials and certifications.
- Experience with Microsoft Office and the ability to learn electronic medical record systems and other software systems.

Pay Range
Minimum $24.70, Midpoint $29.50, Maximum $34.20
Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
