Lead Sustaining Engineer

About the Role

We are looking for a Lead Sustaining Engineer to take ownership of ongoing engineering support for LightWELD . In this pivotal role, you will lead cross-functional efforts to improve product performance, resolve field and manufacturing issues, and implement design and process enhancements throughout the product lifecycle. This is a hands-on leadership opportunity to shape the long-term reliability, quality, and value of an innovative, high-impact product.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the technical lead for sustaining engineering efforts on the LightWELD product line
  • Lead root cause investigations and corrective actions for field and production issues
  • Drive and manage Engineering Change Orders (ECOs), documentation updates, and product improvements
  • Collaborate with Design, Manufacturing, Quality, and Supply Chain teams to maintain and improve product reliability and manufacturability
  • Identify and execute cost-reduction initiatives through design, sourcing, or process optimization
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and industry standards (e.g., CE, UL, ISO)
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical direction on sustaining priorities
  • Maintain product performance metrics and reporting for internal stakeholders


Qualifications:

  • Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
  • 5+ years of engineering experience, including at least 2 years in sustaining or manufacturing support
  • Strong background in electro-mechanical systems or complex hardware products
  • Proven leadership in cross-functional environments
  • Excellent problem-solving, documentation, and communication skills
  • Preferred:
  • Proficiency in CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks, Creo, or similar)
  • Experience with laser systems, optics, or high-tech industrial equipment
  • Familiarity with quality systems such as ISO 9001 or ISO 13485
  • Knowledge of design tools including FMEA, DFM/DFA, GD&T
  • Exposure to international compliance standards (e.g., CE Mark, RoHS, REACH)





Job Summary



This position requires the skills and experience in the design and documentation of Mechanical systems manufactured by IPG Systems. Work skills and discipline are required to complete specific engineering tasks and will work closely with other Engineering personnel. You will be utilizing multiple engineering skills including design of mechanical structures, motion systems and electrical/pneumatic controls systems for robotic mechanism. The successful candidate must have a sense of accountability to ensure that equipment developed by IPG Systems is responsive to the needs of customers, cost effective, and delivered in a timely manner.



Job Functions




  • Responsible for Mechanical CAD design and development
  • Analyze product or equipment specifications and performance requirements to determine design requirements for manufacturability as defined by existing processes and methods
  • Specify system components or direct modification of products to ensure conformance with engineering design and performance specification
  • Maintain documentation associated within a project including engineering change notices, bills of materials, detailed CAD models and associated component drawings.
  • Create and maintain part numbers and BOM's in the IPG ERP system
  • Directly involved in the transfer of hardware designs to manufacturing
