What You'll Do:This position offers a great opportunity for leadership, collaboration, and support for both Vulcan Managers and our customers. It provides a good mix of lab and office time, as well as time spent on job sites and at Vulcan plants, perfect for a candidate who enjoys a fast pace and variety in their work.
Maintain Product Awareness. Communicate critical quality and production issues to the Technical Services Manager (TSM), and Director, Technical services (DTS) for Ready-Mix. Develop workable solutions for the plant and product issues. Understand plant flow and the different plant processes of all operations in the area. Implement Business Plans. Assist in implementing and maintaining the area's business unit plans and strategic QC/QA initiatives. Sample. Supervise, coordinate, and/or perform plant strength testing, data interpretation to improve plant optimization and efficiencies for the area of responsibility. Work with Managers. Work closely with the TSM, DTS, Production Managers, and Plant Managers on current and future Ready Mix plans and plant changes that may affect quality ratings. Resolve Customer Issues. Assist in investigating, resolving, and documenting customer complaints. Train. Assist the Technical Services Department in training in areas such as sampling, testing, correct handling of aggregates, and utilization of Technical Services computer program. Troubleshoot, educate and supervise staff. Manage Lab and Plant QC Technicians. Provide leadership and guidance to the QC technicians, ensuring proper testing procedures and fostering their development. Implement Concrete Quality Practices. Help implement Vulcan concrete quality practices at the plant. Conduct Concrete Trial Batches. Conduct concrete trial batches in the lab and the plant and evaluate mixtures for performance. Monitor Material Variability. Monitor inbound material variability through lab tests and focus on reducing concrete variability and preventing failures. Maintain Concrete Laboratory. Maintain the concrete laboratory in compliance with CCRL -- including proficiency sample testing, maintaining inventory and curing room, calibrated equipment, and certified technicians. Data Analysis and Troubleshooting. Perform data analysis and concrete troubleshooting. Attend Preconstruction Conferences. Go to preconstruction conferences and provide input on concrete quality and performance. Adjust Mixtures. Adjust mixtures to meet performance while meeting specifications. Perform Non-Destructive Strength Tests. Perform non-destructive strength tests on concrete and jobsite fresh concrete tests as necessary. Additional Responsibilities. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Skills You'll Need:
Experience. With a college degree, must have a minimum of 2 years of experience in engineering, mining, geology or related field. Without a college degree, must have a minimum of 5 years of experience. Must have the ability to obtain state certification(s) within one year of employment. Communication Skills. Must possess excellent oral communication skills. Must possess strong written communication skills to develop communication regarding technical matters, including writing test procedures. Excellent communication and leadership skills are essential for this role. Time Management Skills. Must have ability to work in a very stressful, deadline-oriented environment that requires complex, technical information and decision making. Must be able to present information in a clear and concise manner. This role requires an individual who enjoys a fast pace and variety in their work, along with good organizational skills. Technology Skills. Must be able to use telephone, fax machines, lab equipment, computers, cell phones, and other electronic devices. Must be able to operate motorized vehicles. Product Knowledge. Must possess a high degree of product knowledge and end-use applications. Must have an understanding of VMC quality information system. Must understand and be familiar with mix design characteristics and various product specifications. Understand factors influencing concrete performance. Operational Knowledge. Must have the ability to perform all QC Tech duties. Must possess working knowledge of ready-mix concrete plant operations. Must possess extensive knowledge of ASTM, DOT, and AASHTO testing procedures, and hold current certifications (at minimum ACI certification). Must be knowledgeable in product-related specifications and finished products. Ability to read concrete specifications and understand concrete requirements. Understand or the ability to learn mix design, dispatch and batching system software. Regulatory Knowledge. Must be able to understand, interpret, and apply policies and procedures. Must display knowledge and understanding of OSHA and MSHA rules and regulations. Interpersonal Skills. Must possess strong verbal communication skills for dealing with plant production personnel, plant managers, contractors, and agency representatives. Driving Skills. Must have a current, valid driver's license. Excel Skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel. Physical Requirements. Ability to lift 50 lbs waist high multiple times a day. Certifications. ACI and NRMCA concrete technology certifications. Supervisory Experience. Some supervisory experience and ability to mentor others. Work Ethic. Detail-oriented, safety, and team-oriented. Be able to work at early or late hours and long hours.

The base salary range for this role is between $79,500 - $111,300 annual salary. This range is not inclusive of our discretionary bonus or equity package. When determining a candidate's compensation, we consider a number of factors, including skillset, experience, job scope, and current market data.
