This role provides hands-on technical expertise across multiple database platforms (SQL, NoSQL, document, graph, vector, search, etc.) to maximize availability, recoverability, performance, security, and customer satisfaction. You will drive adoption of Platform Engineering and DevOps best practices, including CI/CD, Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC), Configuration-as-Code (CaC), automation, container architectures, hybrid cloud models, and AI-powered data platforms. You'll be a technical expert and change leader, functioning independently and collaboratively, with a passion for modern database technologies and mentoring others. What you will do:
- Provide technical leadership and subject matter expertise in on-premise database platforms (MS SQL, MongoDB, DB2, etc.), Azure infrastructure, Azure SQL Family, MongoDB Atlas, and general database management.
- Support modernization and migration of on-prem workloads to cloud or hybrid platforms.
- Champion modern database technologies including PostgreSQL, Aurora, Cosmos DB, Vector DB, and AI-powered platforms.
- Architect, size, deploy, and secure database platforms supporting new and existing applications.
- Support production database environment availability, stability, performance, and security.
- Automate database provisioning, configuration, and maintenance using Terraform, Ansible, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Participate in incident response and on-call rotations, responding promptly to alerts and handling major incidents.
- Review database code and objects to maintain standards, improve performance, and ensure system stability.
- Deploy and use observability tools for real-time monitoring and alerting
- Monitor and tune database systems proactively using replication, partitioning, and sharding strategies.
- Implement and enforce security and compliance/audit best practices including zero-trust principles, encryption, RBAC.
- Develop and maintain backup and disaster recovery plans to ensure data integrity and business continuity.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with developers, architects, SRE, Infrastructure, and Enterprise Architecture teams.
- Mentor your peers and internal customers/developers
- Maintain comprehensive documentation of database configurations, processes, and procedures.
What we expect of you:
- At least 5 years of hands-on experience with Azure SQL Family (SQL Database, Managed Instance, SQL Server on Azure VM), MongoDB Atlas, and infrastructure automation tools (Terraform, Ansible, PowerShell).
- Proven success migrating production databases from on-premises to cloud platforms.
- Expertise in database performance tuning, replication, security (RBAC, encryption), backup, and recovery strategies.
- Strong scripting skills in PowerShell, Python, Bash, or similar languages.
- Solid knowledge of Windows Server and Linux/Unix environments including performance monitoring, package management, and job scheduling.
- Strong networking and security knowledge related to cloud and database environments.
- Experience with monitoring and incident management tools such as Datadog, PagerDuty, and ServiceNow.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to simplify complex technical topics.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage priorities, and lead smaller technical projects.
- Ability to build rapport and collaborate cross-functionally with technical and non-technical teams.
- Experience architecting and deploying database ecosystems from scratch, a plus.
- Understanding of Platform Engineering/DevOps/DevSecOps practices and tooling related to database administration, a plus.
- Familiarity with container orchestration platforms such as Kubernetes, ECS, or Docker Swarm, a plus.
- Experience with on-premise and multiple cloud providers (Azure, AWS, GCP, etc.) as related to database platforms, a plus.
- Proficiency with Datadog, PagerDuty, ServiceNow, a plus.
