Description

The Midwest Process/Mechanical Portfolio Discipline Leader (PDL) manages a team of process and mechanical engineers in delivering industry leading water, wastewater, and remediation designs to clients. The PDL is a highly strategic resource that utilizes strength in group leadership, design management, and specific discipline engineering design of water and wastewater facilities. The PDL manages the Process and Mechanical group workload, hiring, and project assignments, as well as providing mentorship and performance feedback for group employees. This role manages the work efforts of the team, with latitude to make decisions to achieve defined goals, resulting in significant impact on the unit and organization.


Responsibilities:

  • Supervise design discipline employees, evaluating annual performance, managing performance, and facilitating training.
  • Provide regular communication and/or meetings with the specific design discipline team to discuss workload for current and upcoming projects.
  • Represent the discipline to the Business Unit Client Sales Team with support for technical sales efforts and proposals.
  • Lead design discipline scope, schedule and effort development in partnership with PMs and DMs.
  • Coordinate with PM/DM regarding staffing, schedule, or scope adjustments and escalate issues as required.
  • Develop relationships with fellow Portfolio Discipline Leaders (PDLs) and the National Practice Leader within Brown and Caldwell to collaborate and solve problems around resources, workload, technical issues, design workflow, quality, efficiency, etc.
  • Participate in technical leadership meetings for the specific design discipline and provide follow-up direction to team.
  • Provide leadership for the development of design discipline specific standards (e.g., specifications, standard details, etc.)and work with the National Practice Leader to coordinate resources for standards creation and production.
  • Maintain workload tracking tool for the specific design discipline to maintain an understanding of the team's workload and gaps that may be present.
  • Build professional networks and relationships with subconsultants and on-call supplemental resources and coordinate their engagement on projects as needed.
  • Track and maintain professional engineer registration coverage for specific design discipline per business needs.
  • Perform QA/QC reviews for selected projects and help ensure all project deliverables meet BC standards.
  • Lead, develop, and coach a high-performing team by setting clear expectations, providing feedback, and fostering a culture of engagement, growth, and accountability.
  • Oversee workload planning, performance management, and team operations to align resources with business objectives while ensuring compliance with company policies and regulations.
  • Flexibility to adapt and execute various additional assignments based on evolving needs.


Skills and Competencies:

  • Demonstrated strong group management and design management skills.
  • Ability to focus on group and project needs while balancing multiple priorities including, but not limited to, design discipline team management, design, bidding, and construction management services.
  • Successful ability to assist with proposal technical approach development and design discipline effort budgeting.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills with demonstrated ability to conduct effective presentations and technical written report preparation.
  • Effective social and management skills are necessary to genuinely motivate and direct staff to produce high quality work and to maintain high individual and group morale.
  • Enthusiastic, self-motivated, and work independently with a willingness to learn.
  • Self-starter, results oriented and able to work under tight and pressured deadlines.


Experience:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 15 years of relevant experience in the design discipline specific or related field.
  • Professional Engineer registration is required.


Education:

  • A bachelor's degree in civil, environmental, chemical, or mechanical engineering or related field, or equivalent relevant experience is required.


Salary Range: The anticipated starting pay range for this position is based on the employee's primary work location and may be more or less depending upon skills, experience, and education. These ranges may be modified in the future.

Location A: $106,000 - $145,000

Location B: $117,000 - $160,000
