Position Overview
The Department of Molecular Biosciences, University of Kansas, seeks an assistant researcher with experience and/or interest in molecular virology, biochemistry, and antiviral research. The successful candidate will be engaged in projects investigating multiple aspects of the coronavirus macrodomain and its impact on viral replication and pathogenesis. The projects will involve performing several molecular techniques including but not limited to: reverse genetics, cloning, eukaryotic cell culture, transfections, enzyme assays, virus-based assays, etc. In addition, the applicant will manage day-to-day operations, including ordering, upkeep of the lab, and our mouse colony. Prior experience in molecular biology and/or animal work is desired. The applicant should be motivated, organized, detail-oriented, work well with others, have a willingness to learn, and be able to participate in many different lab activities.

Job Description
  • 60% - Carryout project that focuses on engineering and characterizing recombinant coronaviruses and testing antiviral compounds. This project requires specific skills in reverse genetics, cloning, biochemistry, cell culture and virological assays.
  • 40% - General lab tasks such as maintaining our animal colony, ordering, lab organization and general maintenance. The applicant will also be expected to supervise and eventually train other members of the lab.

Required Qualifications
  1. B.S./B.A. in Biology or related field.
  2. Previous lab experience with molecular or microbiological techniques, as evidenced in the resume.
This position requires a formal degree in the cited discipline area(s) to ensure that candidates have advanced knowledge, analytical skills and professional competencies necessary to perform the duties of the position. The level of degree is commonly recognized as the standard qualification for similar roles in the public and private sector, ensuring that the university remains competitive with industry aligned practices, enhances collaboration with external partners, and supports the delivery of services and programs that meet professional and market-driven expectations.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Previous experience in molecular cloning techniques, as evidenced by application materials.
  2. Previous experience in eukaryotic cell culture and microbiology/virology techniques or prior work with animals, as evidenced by application materials.
