The Opportunity

Our Credit Risk team is looking to add an #EnergyProblemSolver in Calgary or Houston to develop and maintain the company's robust counterparty risk controls while supporting commercial operations and strategic growth initiatives. This team is responsible for the evaluation of counterparty creditworthiness, establish appropriate credit limits, monitor exposures, and implement risk mitigation strategies to safeguard TC Energy's financial interests while supporting business objectives.

We are seeking a Director Counterparty Risk who will play a pivotal leadership role within our organization, responsible for shaping, implementing, and overseeing the enterprise-wde credit risk management framework. This individual will report directly to the VP Risk Management and partner closely with other senior leaders across business units, finance, and compliance to promote a balanced approach to risk and growth. The Director will be entrusted with developing and leading a team of credit professionals, managing complex credit portfolios, and providing strategic insights to drive informed decision-making and sustainable profitability.

What you'll do

  • Design, implement, and continuously enhance the organization's credit risk management framework, policies, and procedures in alignment with overall corporate strategy and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee a comprehensive credit review and adjudication process
  • Establish and maintain credit allocation frameworks and approval authorities
  • Monitor credit exposures across the organization and implement mitigation strategies
  • Establish credit risk appetite and tolerance limits; develop risk metrics and reporting standards for board and executive management.
  • Lead the identification, assessment, and prioritization of credit risks, establishing risk mitigation strategies and escalation protocols as appropriate.
  • Advise on the structuring of credit transactions, including complex lending, derivatives, and structured products.
  • Direct the evaluation and administration of financial assurance instruments including letters of credit, parent guarantees, and cash collateral
  • Collaborate with Legal, Operations and Commercial teams to incorporate appropriate risk mitigation terms in contracts
  • Provide expert guidance on credit implications of new business opportunities and tariff rate cases
  • Drive continuous improvement in credit risk management processes and capabilities
  • Lead the implementation of technology solutions to enhance efficiency and effectiveness
  • Identify opportunities to streamline workflows while maintaining robust controls
  • Represent TC Energy in industry forums related to credit risk management

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, economics, business, risk management, or a related discipline required; advanced degree (MBA, MSc, CFA, FRM) strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years' progressive experience in credit risk management within a banking, energy, commodity trading, or large corporate environment.
  • Proven track record of success in leading credit risk teams and managing large, complex credit portfolios across diverse geographies and asset classes.
  • Expert knowledge of U.S. and Canadian credit risk regulations, credit rating methodologies, and credit analytics.
  • Strong understanding of financial instruments and credit mitigation tools
  • Proficiency with credit risk management systems and financial modeling
  • Experience with internal/external audits, and interactions with senior stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex risk concepts in clear, concise language to diverse audiences, from Senior executives to business line managers.
  • Change management experience, a passion for innovation, and a commitment to continuous improvement
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities
  • Proven ability to build and lead high-performing teams
  • Strategic thinker with ability to balance risk management with business objectives

This position requires candidates to:

  • Have current, valid authorization to travel internationally (including but not limited to Canada, US and Mexico)
  • Travel to other company locations for temporary assignments, meetings or training will be required (estimated up 10% of work schedule)
  • Possess, or be eligible to receive, a valid passport and maintain travel eligibility for Domestic, Cross Border, and International Travel (including the USA and Mexico)
  • Bankruptcy, Credit, Civil and Criminal background checks will be required
