Job Description

We are seeking applicants for a Veterinary Assistant position in Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation service. The Small Animal Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Service aims to be Missouri's premier performance and rehabilitation center for companion and working animals. With a team-based approach, we are committed to offering leading-edge care to optimize recovery, performance of daily life and sport activities, and quality of life for our patients.

Typical responsibilities for the Veterinary Assistant may include:

Safely restrain, handle, and transport patients

  • Develop a basic understanding of dog behavior and apply appropriate training/shaping methods
  • Conduct therapeutic rehabilitative exercises with patients; must be able to perform highly active movements when working with patients, including sitting, kneeling, standing, and lifting
  • Comfortably and safely operate a variety of therapeutic equipment, including but not limited to:
    • An Underwater Treadmill system
    • A Class IV LASER system
  • Maintain and care for diagnostic, treatment, and surgical equipment
  • Clean, organize and stock treatment and examination rooms
  • Respond to phone inquiries regarding appointments
  • Utilize hospital information system and other software for data entry
  • Collect samples (e.g., blood, urine and fecal) and administer medications as instructed
  • Perform basic diagnostic procedures as requested within skill set of the particular assistant consistent with MVMB guidelines
  • Perform other duties as trained and assigned

Veterinarians throughout the Midwest refer animal clients to the Veterinary Health Center for specialized diagnoses and treatment. With sophisticated therapeutic equipment that includes an underwater treadmill, advanced imaging techniques, and groundbreaking equine lameness diagnostic equipment, we are a center for animal healthcare. Our facility, located at Clydesdale Hall, provides state-of-the-art teaching and medical services, including ambulatory services. In addition to regular check-ups and preventive health care, we feature cutting edge surgical and intensive lifesaving medical care.

Shift

This is a full-time, 40 hour per week position. Normal hour are during the day, Monday through Friday.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience working with or handling animals is necessary. Previous experience in a veterinary clinic and/or knowledge of medical terminology is preferred.

Successful candidate will exhibit the following skills and core competencies:

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to successfully interact with both internal and external customers and stakeholders.
  • A high degree of organization and attention to detail including critical thinking and observational skills.
  • Strong time management skills and the ability to prioritize tasks depending on needs.
  • Computer skills to maintain medical records about animals in veterinary software.
  • Willingness to learn and grow professionally, as well as be a supportive and collegial team member.
Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range: $16.00 per hour
Grade: GGS-004
