At Fairfax County Wastewater Collections, we recognize and value top-notch troubleshooters for their expertise and problem-solving abilities. Please join us as an Instrumentation Technician II and help in maintaining the outstanding reliability and performance of our approximately 70 Wastewater Pumping Stations.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Serves as a skilled journey level instrumentation technician, performing work in the installation, maintenance and repair of instrumentation and electronic equipment.
  • Installs, calibrates, and repairs open channel wastewater flow metering equipment & wastewater pump stations instrumentation & controls.
  • Maintains pump station programmable logic controllers & communication equipment related to WCD SCADA system. Performs downloads & uploads to PLC's & touchscreens in the field.
  • Performs scheduled maintenance on pump station Instrumentation and controls to ensure reliable operation and proper functioning or alarm systems
  • Uses a laptop computer for troubleshooting and researching technical information related to field installations.
  • Documents work performed in a computer-based work order system.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Note: The appointee to this position is subject to emergency callback 24 hours a day/seven days a week (24/7) to respond to snow, flood, and other emergencies requiring division resources.

*A $2,500 signing bonus is available to new county employees hired in the Instrumentation Technician II position.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to graduation from high school, or a GED issued by a state department of education or completion of a vocation course of an instrumentation/ technician/electronic or similar vocational and or apprenticeship program; plus three years of work experience related to the installation, maintenance and repair of industrial instrumentation or electronic, electrical equipment found in water or wastewater utilities.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
A valid driver's license.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, driving record check, and a pre-employment physical examination to the satisfaction of the employer.

Subject to 24 hour call back and must, therefore, be able to work emergency overtime. Subject to working in adverse weather conditions and may be exposed to raw waste or environments generating methane gas. Ability to distinguish different color wiring.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associates degree in instrumentation/electrical/electronic technology or related field.
  • Journeyman's license in Instrumentation, Electrical and or ISA certification.
  • Two years of experience troubleshooting and repairing electrical & instrumentation control systems.
  • One year of experience monitoring SCADA and PLCs for troubleshooting and analysis.
  • One year of experience in a water treatment or pump station maintenance group.
  • One year of experience reading instrumentation data, interpreting schematics, circuit diagrams, and manuals related to Instrumentation.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to distinguish colors. Ability to drive 1/2, 3/4, & 1 Ton utility truck and operate hoisting equipment. Ability to frequently bend, stoop, and climb. Work may be performed under physically strenuous conditions, including limited-space environments, cramped areas, and uncomfortable positions. Entry into confined spaces is required, subject to all applicable safety requirements. Confined spaces may not be entered by persons who weigh 310 pounds or more. Ability to lift, carry, and handle items weighing up to 50 pounds. Frequent exposure to loud noises and rare exposure to airborne substances. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
