DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This trainee position entails operating highway construction and maintenance equipment, including snow removal with plow attachments on roads and bridges during winter. The role involves using loaders and other machinery, with the goal of achieving certification for at least two additional equipment types during the probationary period, leading to a total of six certifications. The trainee will also participate in manual labor tasks as part of a highway or bridge maintenance crew, which includes flagging and traffic control.

Training will emphasize acquiring the necessary licenses and certifications for operating heavy construction equipment, particularly Heavy Truck/Tandem Axle (HT/TA) and loaders with a bucket capacity of 4.5 cubic yards or less. The trainee will learn to perform and document essential pre- and post-operation checks, as well as make field adjustments to ensure safe operation and minimize equipment wear.

Moreover, the position requires proficiency in operating various hand and foot controls, using seat belts, and installing or removing tire chains on dual wheels. The trainee will also receive training in performing a variety of manual labor tasks with both motorized and non-motorized hand tools, such as shovels, rakes, hammers, and chainsaws. Emphasis will be placed on the proper selection and use of tools to reduce wear and breakage, along with the importance of reporting any missing or damaged equipment.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment.
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch
  • Dual shifts, overtime, and travel may be required. Work hours subject to seasonal change.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Special Requirements:

  • This position requires possession of a valid Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C Driver's License or equivalent.
  • This position requires possession of a valid Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver Learner's Permit on the first day of work.
  • This position requires possession of a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations on the first day of work.
  • This position requires operation of vehicles or equipment with a manual transmission.

Conditions of Employment:

  • This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
