Location: This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with required onsite days on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and may be assigned to any Consumers Energy Service Center located throughout Michigan's lower Peninsula. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).


General Summary of Job Responsibilities

The Principal Program (Standards) Engineer within the Gas Standards and Gas Compliance & Information organization supports the gas business by providing leadership and ownership of PHMSA 192 standards, procedures, and work instructions. This role involves interpreting state and federal regulations to facilitate updates to critical standard work materials and collaborating with business partners across the enterprise.


The Principal Program Engineer is responsible for the engineering and technical disciplines required to successfully execute projects. This includes overseeing multiple initiatives, planning and establishing project criteria, coordinating reviews, and ensuring proper implementation of project elements. The incumbent will schedule, plan, forecast, allocate resources, and manage all technical activities to ensure project accuracy and quality from conception to completion. Additionally, this role is accountable for team deliverables and supervises the work of junior engineers and technicians.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare, schedule, coordinate, and monitor assigned engineering projects
  • Assign responsibilities and mentor project team members
  • Build strong partnerships with business stakeholders and develop a deep understanding of their goals
  • Interact with clients to interpret their needs and requirements, and represent them in the field
  • Ensure compliance with applicable codes, practices, QA/QC policies, performance standards, and specifications
  • Support Agile project delivery by balancing team performance with tight deadlines
  • Develop specifications for required project equipment
  • Review engineering deliverables and initiate corrective actions as needed
  • Provide technical support to project managers and other participants
  • Collaborate with senior engineers to improve project efficiency and maintain profitability
  • Perform quality control tasks related to budgets, schedules, plans, and personnel performance
  • Report on project status and progress
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency in design and visualization software (e.g., AutoCAD)
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office with the ability to learn new software quickly
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Solid understanding of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) principles
  • Familiarity with relevant regulations, best practices, and performance standards

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program with seven (7) or more years of experience with program engineering and working on advanced projects

    • [OR]Bachelor's Degree in Engineeringfrom a non-ABET accredited program plus a Professional Engineering licenseseven (7) or more years of experience with program engineering and working on advanced projects
