Ultra Maritime is seeking a Senior Quality Engineer with 5-6 years of experience in quality engineering and inspection roles. This Quality hybrid position combines the responsibilities of a Quality Engineer, Receiving Inspector, and Manufacturing Line Inspector to ensure compliance across the supply chain, incoming material inspection, and production floor activities. The role also involves supporting audits, compliance activities, and contractual obligations with the Defense Contract Management Agency (DCMA). The ideal candidate will play a hands-on role in maintaining product quality, supporting Root Cause Analysis (RCA), gaining exposure to Process Failure Mode & Effects Analysis (PFMEA), and ensuring adherence to defense and customer requirements.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Perform incoming inspections of mechanical, electrical, and electronic components against drawings, specifications, and defense standards.

  • Conduct in-process and final inspections of assemblies, subassemblies, and finished products on the manufacturing floor.

  • Develop, review, and maintain inspection documentation, test plans, and quality records in compliance with ISO 9001 and contractual requirements.

  • Collaborate with suppliers, engineering, and production teams to resolve nonconformances and drive timely dispositions through the Material Review Board (MRB).

  • Support root cause analysis (RCA) and corrective action development, with guidance from senior quality engineers as needed.

  • Participate in PFMEA activities and other risk-based quality tools to identify potential process risks and mitigation strategies (training available).

  • Ensure inspection tools and gauges are calibrated and properly used to verify product conformance.

  • Interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical data packages (TDPs) to establish inspection criteria.

  • Interface with DCMA representatives during source inspections, audits, and product acceptance reviews to ensure compliance with defense contracts.

  • Prepare and present objective quality evidence (OQE) and inspection records for DCMA acceptance.

  • Maintain accurate documentation in ERP/QMS systems, including inspection results and nonconformance reporting.

  • Promote and enforce quality culture on the manufacturing floor, acting as a liaison between production and quality engineering.

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of quality assurance principles, inspection practices, ISO 9001, and defense contract compliance.

  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and technical data packages.

  • Familiarity with DCMA requirements, government oversight processes, and defense/military specifications.

  • Exposure to Root Cause Analysis (RCA) methods (5-Whys, Fishbone, 8D, etc.); willingness to develop stronger expertise.

  • Exposure to PFMEA or other risk analysis tools; training provided as part of professional growth.

  • Hands-on experience with mechanical and electrical inspection tools (e.g., micrometers, calipers, multimeters, CMMs).

  • Proficiency in ERP and QMS systems for inspection record-keeping and nonconformance tracking.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work cross-functionally with suppliers, engineers, production staff, and external agencies such as DCMA.

  • Problem-solving and analytical skills for corrective and preventive action development.

  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and time management abilities.

Education and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, or related technical discipline or equivalent work experience.

  • 2-5 years of professional experience in a quality engineering or inspection role.

  • Experience in a defense, aerospace, or other highly regulated industry preferred.

  • Prior experience supporting DCMA source inspections or government quality oversight strongly preferred.

  • Exposure to RCA, PFMEA, and other risk-based quality management practices preferred; training provided.

  • ASQ certifications (CQI, CQE, CQA) or equivalent are a plus.

  • U.S. Citizenship required due to defense contract regulations; ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance required.

Typically, a Bachelor Degree (or equivalent) and 6+ years of related experience.
May be required to maintain security clearance
