Position Highlights

The University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix is seeking a vice chair of research in the Department of Orthopaedics. This is an opportunity for an outstanding leader with a national/international reputation as a respected and accomplished academician, clinician, educator and collaborator with a proven track record in innovating research. A qualified individual will also serve as the director of Basic and Translational Science Research for the department.

The vice chair will work in strategic consultation with the department chair and the College's Translational Research Office (TReO). The vice chair will work alongside the chair and focus their efforts on the development of a multidisciplinary program for basic science research and translational clinical studies. As vice chair, this individual will be a nurturing mentor to faculty and trainees, providing ongoing guidance and support of their professional development. They must be a respected leader who is clinically active and has an established record of building a basic science research program. The candidate must be viewed by stakeholders as an effective leader who will help guide the multi-disciplinary program and hospital system.

The vice chair will assist the department in developing a research vision and infrastructure, seeking grant and other funding opportunities, serving as a principal investigator, developing research plans and methods, implanting and managing research studies and disseminating research findings. In addition, this individual will be expected to develop collaborative relationships with other university, clinical and community partners fostering a cutting-edge translational science program.

The successful candidate will fulfill the responsibilities of a faculty member in an appropriate department, actively participate in teaching, clinical service and/or scholarly work and must qualify for an appointment at the rank of full professor.
The successful candidate will meet the requirements of a career track faculty according to the College and University guidelines.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement departmental research vision and infrastructure focusing on clinical trials, grantsmanship and original research.
  • Build a multi-disciplinary basic science research program in Orthopaedic Surgery.
  • Build internal and external relationships to inspire and promote academic collaborations across the health system.
  • Promote and provide a research and teaching environment of the highest quality and integrity.
  • Foster programs of national distinction through innovation and collaboration.
  • Mentor medical students, residents, fellows and faculty.
  • Engage in teaching and research activities for students, residents and fellows.
  • Participate on appropriate department and/or College committees as well as professional organizations, as appropriate.
  • Participate in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery call schedule at Banner - University Medical Center Phoenix.
  • Research and other scholarly work.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Have an MD, DO or an equivalent
    degree from an accredited institution.
  • Be eligible for a University of
    Arizona academic appointment at the full professor level.
  • Be board certified in Orthopaedic
    Surgery and be eligible for a medical licensure in the State of Arizona.
  • Be eligible for medical staff
    membership at Banner - University Medical Center Phoenix.
  • Have a track record of
    publishing research findings.
  • Demonstrate outstanding interpersonal communication and professionalism skills.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Have experience mentoring students in research projects.
  • Have experience supervising faculty and staff.
