The Senior Clinical Veterinarian is a key leadership role within the Laboratory Animal Medicine program, providing advanced veterinary oversight, clinical expertise, and program management in collaboration with the Attending Veterinarian. This position serves as a mentor and manager for a team of veterinarians, ensuring high standards of animal welfare, veterinary care, regulatory compliance and scientific collaboration. The Senior Clinical Veterinarian partners closely with the Attending Veterinarian to deliver strategic oversight of veterinary services across the site.
Leadership & Supervision
- Directly manage, mentor, and support a team of 5-6 veterinarians.
- Conduct regular performance reviews, coaching, and professional development planning.
- Oversee daily scheduling, workload distribution, and coverage to ensure veterinary support across all programs.
- Promote a culture of collaboration, compliance, and continuous improvement.
- Collaborate closely with veterinary technicians, supporting their professional growth and ensuring alignment between veterinarians and technical staff.
- Foster a culture of inclusiveness, teamwork and respect within the veterinary group, encouraging collaboration, mentoring and knowledge sharing across all levels of staff.
- Promote a supportive and nurturing environment where veterinarians, veterinary technicians and technical staff feel engaged, valued and empowered to contribute to program success.
Clinical Responsibilities
- Provide advanced veterinary care for nonhuman primate models.
- Perform and supervise diagnostic, preventive, surgical, and therapeutic procedures.
- Consult with investigators and client representatives regarding study design, animal models, clinical outcomes, colony health and welfare considerations.
- Review, interpret, and apply veterinary medical data to support evidence-based medicine.
Regulatory & Compliance Oversight
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations including USDA, OLAW, AAALAC, and CDC requirements.
- Assist the Attending Veterinarian in fulfilling regulatory obligations, including semiannual program reviews, inspections, and reporting.
- Review and provide veterinary input on IACUC protocols; serve as a voting member as assigned.
- Maintain accurate medical records and ensure veterinary staff adhere to documentation standards.
Program Development & Strategic Support
- Partner with the Attending Veterinarian to set strategic direction for veterinary services.
- Identify and implement process improvements that enhance animal welfare, clinical care, and research outcomes.
- Contribute to training programs for veterinary staff, research personnel, and animal care staff.
- Represent the veterinary team in cross-functional meetings, audits, and sponsor/client interactions.
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or equivalent) from an AVMA-accredited institution.
- Active veterinary license in at least one U.S. state; ability to obtain Texas licensure within 6 months of hire.
- Minimum 5-7 years of progressive experience in laboratory animal medicine.
- American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) board certification strongly preferred; board-eligible candidates will be considered.
- Demonstrated leadership experience managing veterinary teams.
- Strong working knowledge of applicable regulatory requirements (USDA, OLAW, AAALAC, CDC).
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to balance clinical responsibilities with staff development and administrative oversight.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
- Work performed in surgical, clinical, and office settings.
- Exposure to laboratory animals, allergens, and research environments.
- Participation in after-hours, weekend, and on-call veterinary coverage required.
- May involve occasional lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
- Must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

*This position could be offered at different levels for candidates who qualify with a combination of advanced levels of education and/or years of experience. The salary range will adjust along with the level of the role to match the person's relevant experience and/or education level.
