The Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking a Department Manager who will be responsible for delivering a wide range of nuclear fuel development and demonstration work. This position reports to the Director of the Fuel Fabrication & Nuclear Material Management (FFNMM) Division. Our team works a 4x10 schedule located out of our Materials and Fuels Complex with every Friday off.

INL was established as the lead national laboratory for DOE-NE to provide much of the nuclear research, development, and demonstration capability needed to move nuclear innovation forward to deployment. MFC hosts a unique combination of personnel, facilities and infrastructure and offers the ability to perform research, development and demonstration on nuclear technologies.

The FF&NMM division seeks to support the INL's nuclear research mission through several key areas: 1) expanding our basic science research capabilities; 2) expanding our fuels development capabilities, including new processes; 3) expanding our irradiation experiment assembly capacity and capabilities; and 4) prepare for engineering-scale demonstration of new fuel systems. The department manager is responsible to provide strategic leadership and direction supporting these initiatives, with a primary focus on fuels development and experiment assembly.

Responsibilities:

  • Continually work to improve the experiment assembly process. Including coordination with the multiple organizations involved.
  • Strategic development and leadership of research, development and demonstration efforts with fabrication of new fuel concepts including ATF.
  • Line management of a group of 20+ employees across multiple disciplines
  • Contribute to Laboratory, MFC, and FF&NMM division initiatives with strategy and presentation writing as well as presentation delivery when needed
  • Lead efforts to establish university relationships for the development of new research staff and expand research output.
  • Use expertise and resources to obtain consistent desired outcomes for work execution and adherence to regulatory expectations.
  • Must understand and communicate effective application of NQA-1 expectations.
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Senior Manager: Advanced degree in engineering, technical or scientific field and 8 years of increasing leadership experience demonstrating effective skills in recruiting staff, organizing technical work, developing and implementing business plans, and marketing to bring in funded work.
  • Must be a US Citizen and have the ability and willingness to obtain and maintain a DOE "Q" clearance.

Preferred Experience:

* Significant experience with materials and fuels fabrication techniques, nuclear fuel types and fuel performance.

* Personnel management experience

* Excellent communication, presentation, public speaking, technical writing and interpersonal skills.

* Budget management understanding

* Ability to develop department strategic plan with associated metrics

Job Information:

The target pay range for this position is $154,733 - $231,971 annually. The full pay range is $105,516 - $269,052. At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, and work in an office and field/laboratory environment. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation of job-related equipment and driving a vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with the public is required.
