About our group:

The R&D Materials Science Lab at Longmont is a leader in materials and chemicals analysis and serves as a hub for materials science related challenges for the Drive Design Center. The lab team works closely with several cross-functional partners including Product Design Engineering, Head and Media Factories, Supplier Quality Engineering and the Seagate worldwide materials science community to understand complicated materials issues, provide in-depth analyses and develop unique analytical solutions for lab instrumentation. The lab hosts state-of-the-art organic analysis and material science techniques, including multiple GC-MS techniques, FTIR, TGA, DSC, Raman and surface analysis techniques.

About the role - you will:

  • Assist with routine organic laboratory tasks, such as sample preparation, chemical handling, and data entry.
  • Maintain a clean and organized lab environment in accordance with safety and quality protocols.
  • Collaborate with team members to troubleshoot experiments and improve lab workflows.
  • Document experimental procedures and results accurately for internal reporting and knowledge sharing.
  • Perform glassware cleanliness validations to ensure lab equipment meets analytical standards.
  • Prepare and analyze GC standard curves, including the creation of calibration standards and interpretation of results.
  • Support the commissioning of a new analytical instrument (Organic Disc Extractor), including setup, documentation, and preliminary testing

About you:

  • Strong interest in organic chemistry and materials science, with a curiosity-driven approach to solving problems and exploring innovative solutions.
  • Comfortable working in a collaborative team environment, contributing to shared goals and communicating effectively with peers and mentors.
  • Able to work independently on assigned tasks, demonstrating initiative, attention to detail, and time management.
  • Willing to ask questions and seek guidance when needed, while also showing curiosity and problem-solving skills.
  • Adaptable to changing priorities and open to learning new techniques and tools in a dynamic lab setting.

Your experience includes:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Organic Chemistry, Chemical engineering, materials science, or related field and will be returning to school in Fall 2026.
  • Hands-on experience in gas chromatography and some instrument maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Experience writing engineering reports and giving presentations.


You might also have:



  • Experience with materials characterization with other techniques including but not limited to Thermal Desorption, Raman, FTIR, TGA and DSC.
  • Knowledge of polymer chemistry

The estimated base wage range for this position is $22.00 - $35.00/hr. The individual base wage is based on work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Seagate offers comprehensive benefits to its eligible Interns, including, but not limited to, medical, dental, vision, and participation in the employee stock purchase plan. Seagate also offers Interns 12 paid holidays and a minimum of 48 hours of paid sick leave. The benefits for this position are based on a 24 to 40-hour-per-week schedule for a full calendar year and may differ depending on work location and tenure with the Company.
